ESX in the News

June 25th, 2010 No comments

If you missed the opportunity to make it to Pittsburgh for this year’s Electronic Security Expo (ESX), the press has got you – and the event – covered. Check out some of the news coming from this year’s show.

Special Report: ESX 2010 in Pittsburgh

SecurityInfoWatch.com

This is the third Electronic Security Expo I have attended (it’s only the third time this annual event has been held) and this has to have been the best one yet. Owned by the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) and the Electronic Security Association (ESA, formerly the NBFAA), the show brings in some of the top security installing firms and central stations from around the nation along with product vendors, technicians and anyone else who wants to be educated and apprised of the latest trends in technology in this industry. ESX Off with Accolades

The Electronic Security Expo, official show of the Electronic Security Association (ESA) and the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA),  kicked off yesterday [June 15, 2010] and ended a great day of education and networking with the presentation of the industry’s two most prestigious awards—the Sara E. Jackson Memorial Award and the Morris F. Weinstock Person of the Year Award. FULL STORY

Video Verification Strategies: Response and Standards

SecurityInfoWatch.com

The alarm industry is nuts about video. Walking the aisles of ESX 2010 in Pittsburgh, Penn., attendees find that even though the attendees are primarily alarm system company owners and decision makers, video surveillance products are more likely to be found than control panels and PIRs. That falls in line with messaging from the show’s promoter, the Electronic Security Association, that the ESA membership has significantly diversified. What once was a group of alarm dealers is an association of companies that service, install and monitor a wide variety of electronic security and fire equipment solutions. FULL STORY

Video Verification Strategies: Bringing Video into a Central Station

SecurityInfoWatch.com

According to Jim Loyd, the vice president of sales and marketing for Grand Central Station (GCS) in Hayward, Calif., and a speaker on the ESX video verification seminar, one of the first things that has to be decided upon is product selection. Walk any security industry tradeshow floor (but especially ESX), and you’ll see a plethora of companies offering video surveillance and remote monitoring products to security dealers and central stations. Loyd said that GCS took a tier approach to product selection to solve this challenge. FULL STORY

ESX 2010: The Show is Just Getting Started

SecurityInfoWatch.com

It’s not your typical ISC West or other trade show but as a first-time attendee at this year’s ESX 2010, I have to say that for a small show it definitely packs a punch thus far. Although the exhibit show floor opens today, many attendees flew in early to catch the number of educational sessions, including sessions presented by SD&I Editor Deborah O’Mara and Publisher Carol Enman. FULL STORY

ESX 2010 Coverage Part 2: Consumer Driven Technology Drives the Show

SecurityInfoWatch.com

The lines between consumer and security products are crossing. We caught a glimpse of this from some manufacturers earlier this year at ISC West, such as Panasonic Security Systems Company who showcased a consumer line of surveillance products, but it is more than present at this year’s ESX trade show in Pittsburgh, Pa. It is evident that customers want more control and manufacturers are giving them just that. FULL STORY

ESX Day 1

Security Systems News

Every show needs an identity, right? Something that separates it from the myriad industry events that populate the landscape? ESX may be getting there. Maybe first and foremost, there is the Club Crawl. Is it a little ridiculous that a large industry event would define itself with a frat-party-like atmosphere on the first day of its show floor? Maybe. Do people seem to really, really enjoy themselves at this Club Crawl. Hell yes. FULL STORY

Security Systems News

If you’re not getting RMR on your fire jobs, you’re missing a great way to increase cash flow and the value of your company, according to four security industry veterans who gathered June 16 to present “RMR on Fire!,” a panel discussion at the ESX show here. FULL STORY

SIAC Honors Ivan Spector with 2010 William Moody Award

25-year veteran honored for industry leadership and insight

The Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC) announced the winner of the 2010 William N. Moody Award for outstanding excellence in the security alarm industry on June 15. This year’s recipient is Ivan Spector, President of Sentinel Alarm Company in Montreal, Canada. SIAC Executive Director Stan Marin presented Spector with the award at the icebreaker luncheon at the Electronic Security Expo in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Created in 2004 by the SIAC Board of Directors, the William N. Moody Award acknowledges individuals who unselfishly give of their time and talents to alarm management issues and who reflect the attributes of Bill Moody, including integrity, fairness and perseverance in the face of adversity.

“Ivan has been a tireless leader in our industry for more than 25 years,” said Martin. “He was a founding member of SIAC and even served as our Public Relations Chair. His keen insight and great wisdom has   truly advanced alarm management in both Canada and the United States.”

Spector has served the alarm industry in numerous leadership roles. His involvement with CANASA includes its Board of Directors, National President and Chairman of the Response Committee. In this role, Spector proved instrumental in driving many of our False Dispatch Reduction Initiatives.

Currently, Spector also serves on the board of directors for CSAA. In addition to his involvement in serving the alarm industry, Spector also gives back to the Montreal community by volunteering his time on the Board of Directors of the Starlight Foundation. This organization helps seriously ill children and their families cope with their pain, fear and isolation through entertainment, education and family activities.

“Bill Moody is a wonderful individual and winning this award is a great honour,” said Spector. “The alarm industry has made tremendous strides on both sides of the border and it’s my hope to continue our work to reduce dispatches and increase safety of our customers for many years to come.”

EPA Publishes a Series of Lead-Paint Regulations

May 14th, 2010 No comments

This week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published various lead paint renovation and removal requirements for pre-1978 residences and other related proposed regulations for public review in the Federal Register.

The ESA opposed the final version of EPA’s Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule in comments and activities up thru the implementation date of April 22, 2010. The association asked for an exemption for the installation industry and requested the rule be delayed for one year. In recent meetings on Capitol Hill, ESA is seeking to secure Congressional support for delaying implementation of this rule one year so that sufficient training and certification requirements can be implemented within the industry. Congress has until June 22, 2010 to either approve or oppose implementation of the rule.

The EPA is requesting comments on the following proposed rules relating to lead paint:

  • A “Notice of Proposed Rulemaking” in which EPA is asking questions of the public in their desire to impose lead paint renovation and removal requirements for COMMERCIAL AND PUBLIC BUILDINGS. This is a MAJOR expansion of the Pre-1978 residential lead paint rule, and will expand this to over 78M proposed commercial and public buildings. Comments on this proposed rule are also due on July 6, 2010.  (Read Proposed Rule)
  • A proposed rule on “dust wipe testing and certification,” after the renovation and cleaning is completed. The EPA is seeking comments due by July 6, 2010. There is in this document a requirement for an EPA “approved (accredited) renovation dust sampling technician” There are other training requirements being proposed in this regulation. (Read Proposed Rule )
  • The third EPA document is a copy of the FINAL RULE relating to the April 22, 2010 lead paint renovation and repair relating to the Op-Out provision (they did not include any op-out provision or delaying the effective date (they chose not to delay). (Read Proposed Rule)

ESA is seeking comments from members for submission of ESA comments to EPA. Send these to Gov.info@alarm.org no later than June15, 2010.
