I want to thank you for the invitation to go to DC for “Day on Capitol Hill”. I had no preconceived expectations of the event but some apprehension that it would be worth my while. I can now tell you it was worth my while and very educational.  The event was organized and efficiently run by the staff and our paid lobbyist. I appreciate the companies that sponsored the event to help make it a success. The social events were enjoyable and gave me a chance to meet some new colleagues and friends.

The group I was with met with the staff of five different congressmen and senators and one congressman personally who went out of his way to see us.  Two in my group had been before and it was interesting to see that some of the staff remembered them.  The meetings went just as they were described to us how they would. Even though the meetings were short and to the point, I now know why we were there – because we have to be. It is the way the system works and if we want to be heard we have to stay in front of our representatives that make the decisions that could affect our industry.

When I saw that some of the staff remembered us being there before, I realized how important it was to be there every year no matter how big or small the issues are so that they will know who we are and that we care about what they are doing. They need to know that we want to be heard.

I hope I am able to make the trip in the years to come and I will do all I can to encourage others from our state to attend so that we will be able to make contact with more representatives.  Again, thank you for doing such a good job with this important event.

Security Clearance Needed for Day on Capitol Hill

March 18th, 2010 No comments

In order to obtain security clearance for all Day on Capitol Hill participants, we need to know that you’re planning to attend. This year’s event is scheduled for April 27 – 28. Please register today to attend this important event.

All appointments with elected representatives will be made in advance by our Director of Government Relations, John Chwat, and his staff. Before the appointments, attendees will be given specific instructions and briefed on topics to address with their legislators and how to make their presentation effective. John will also obtain security clearances for all attendees and will put together a packet of information on the issues.

These face-to-face meetings are a major part of our government relations efforts to garner support from our legislative representatives on issues that are critical to our industry and public safety. Issues such as ESA’s federal background check legislation, legislative approaches to the Department of Energy’s and the Environmental Protection Agency’s recent regulatory changes, opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act and support for ESA’s balanced approach for life safety.

Congressional speakers, networking and social events will round out the two-day visit to Congress. Plan to attend this important event and support our 2010 legislative agenda.

Our host hotel will again be the lovely St. Gregory Hotel & Suites located in the heart of Washington, D.C. We have contracted a discounted room rate of $240, plus taxes per night.

To make your hotel reservation, call (202) 530-3600 or toll free (800) 829-5034. You must mention that you are with the Electronic Security Association to get the discounted rate. Only a limited number of rooms are available so reservations are on a first come, first served basis until March 28.

Additionally, those flying to DC (airports BWI/DCA/IAD) between April 24 and May 1 can receive a 5 percent discount on airfare from American Airlines when flights are booked on-line at www.AA.com. The promotion code you will need to give is 8940AY.
