Pittsburgh – an exciting venue for ESX 2010!

February 18th, 2010 No comments

By Melissa M. Courville, Client Services & Head of Marketing, DICE Corporation

Finding out that Pittsburgh is the next stop for the industry-changing ESX conference was a thrill!  Having lived in Pittsburgh for a few years, with family ties to the area, it’s easy to fall in love with the city that mixes both history and the NOW, harmoniously. From the architecture of the widely-renowned PPG building, Heinz Ketchup factory and Andy Warhol museum, to the bustling shops at Station Square and beauty of Point Park, Pittsburgh was deservedly voted one of the safest and cleanest cities in the United States, and has been for years.

ESX has already become a highlight in my plans, where security life meets industry-specific networking.  The ESX event continues to be a focal point for security integration and monitoring companies with showcases for the ESA Weinstock/Jackson Awards, CSAA anniversary and the SDM Gala, as well as the niche-focused tradeshow, seminars and conferences.  As the head of marketing for DICE Corporation, I’m very glad that we’ve continued to invest in and make it our commitment to attend each event.  The rewards are priceless.

NJBFAA Bestows Awards to Recognize Leadership and Dedication

February 18th, 2010 No comments

During the recent and successful New Jersey Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NJBFAA) Annual Symposium, several statewide awards were bestowed on deserving individuals to recognize leadership and dedication to the industry.

The awards were given during a special membership luncheon held Friday, January 29.

Alarm Dealer of the Year

The first award, Alarm Dealer of the Year, was presented to Ira Hosid, of Paramus-based IRA Security Systems. Hosid, who is celebrating his 40th anniversary in the business, was chosen for putting family first, a decision he made at the inception of his alarm career. The basis for his business plan was not to be the largest alarm company in New Jersey, but to make sure there was time to go to family affairs. The ‘mom and pop’ business flourished, and now maintains around 1,000 monitored accounts.

During Hosid’s ‘free time’, he is an active member of BARA, Bergen County Amateur Radio Association, which provides communications during disasters, and helps organizations such as the Red Cross both in N.J. and the country.

Hosid always tries to help anyone in the business with service/installation problems. He has never missed an NJBFAA meeting or trade show since joining many years ago,” commented NJBFAA president and emcee Chris Mack.

Associate Member of the Year

The Associate Member of the Year Award went to Joe Camarata of Mid-Atlantic Representatives.     Born and raised in Woodbridge, Camarata received a Bachelor of Science degree in electronic engineering technology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Mid-Atlantic Representatives, owned by David Lund, has been a well respected industry supporter for over thirty years.  Joe joined Mid-Atlantic in September 2006, and is a proud member of the NJ chapter of InfraGARD, a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the private sector, including businesses, academic institutions, state and local law enforcement agencies, and other participants dedicated to sharing information and intelligence to prevent hostile acts against the United States.  He is also a member of CERT – the Community emergency response team, which serve as first responders to any manmade and natural

NJBFAA Frank Smith Memorial Award

The recipient of the NJBFAA Frank Smith Memorial Award for Public Safety was Chief John Lightbody, who currently serves as Toms River Township Fire Prevention & Protection Officer, as well as Toms River Township’s Fire Subcode Official.

Lightbody received the award for serving tirelessly on numerous committees at the state level, most recently supporting the inclusion of sprinklers in residential housing. He has received numerous state and local accommodations and awards and is an adjunct instructor at Ocean County College, teaching fire and building courses. Lightbody is the proud second generation of firefighters, and the father of the third generation – his son, John F.

NJBFAA Distinguished Public Service Award

The Honorable Vincent Prieto was the recipient of the NJBFAA Distinguished Public Service Award.  Since 2004, Assemblyman Prieto has proudly represented the 32nd district, which encompasses Hudson County, serving as the deputy majority whip of the General Assembly, and chairman of the Assembly Regulated Professions Committee. He is a construction code official, and served on the Secaucus Planning Board.

“Prieto is in a unique position to fully understand and support the work of the members of NJBFAA and has agreed to champion new legislation that addresses several flaws from the original licensing law,” said Mack, who thanked Prieto for coming to Atlantic City to participate in the convention. “We look forward to working with him this session towards passage of this important measure.”

President’s Award

The final presentation honored Chris Mosley of Complete Security Systems with the President’s Award.  Chosen by the NJBFAA President, Chris Mack, he selected Mosley for going above and beyond the call of duty, and serving the NJBFAA and the industry by providing advice and assistance. Mosley recently served as NJBFAA president for two years and is currently the representative to the Electronic Security Association.

Paramount to Chris’s success has been the importance of family and community.  Chris gives tirelessly to the Marlboro community, having served as fire chief, past chairman of the Monmouth County Ducks Unlimited, service to the Marlboro Township Office of Emergency Management, and currently chairman of the board of the Community YMCA.

“Chris is a leader in the community, trusted advisor and friends, father, wife and son — and a staunch industry supporter – both at the state and national levels,” said Mack.

The NJBFAA Symposium was held January 27-29 at the Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City.

L to R: Jeff Schulz, Video Project Specialist, and Jim Rao, Director of Video Technology, Vector Security, Inc.; Chris Marsicano, Northeast Regional Sales Manager, Don Beeby, VP of Sales, and Tony Fujita, Executive VP, CBC (AMERICA) Corp.

Citing the quality of Vector Security’s business relationship with their company, CBC (AMERICA) Corporation recently selected Vector Security as the recipient of its first “Video Integrator of the Year” award. CBC (AMERICA) Corp. offers a complete line of CCTV security products under CBC’s own brand names, Computar and GANZ.

Don Beeby, Vice President of Sales for CBC (AMERICA), indicated that their selection of Vector Security was based upon a number of critical factors, including Vector’s integrity and commitment, wide usage of their products and willingness to help direct their engineering efforts in ways which better positioned CBC in several vertical markets, especially national retailers. “The sign of a true partner is not just that they bring you into an account, but that they work to refine your products to better service the demands of the market. That’s exactly what Vector has done and they’ve helped create a win-win-win situation for their customers, for Vector Security and for CBC.”

Jim Rao, Vector Security’s Director of Video Technology for its National Accounts Division, adds, “Normally and understandably, most video integration awards and recognition typically go to companies that are engaged in large scale video integration projects such as healthcare, municipal systems, transportation and public utilities. The fact that Vector Security received this award, as an integrator that focuses primarily on retail, makes it an even greater honor. “

Instructor of the Year

Don Childers won this year’s Instructor of the Year award because of his tireless work on behalf of NTS.  He developed courses, got them approved by the necessary regulatory agencies, scheduled and promoted a statewide and year-long training program, all while never accepting any compensation for the hours of planning and instructing he personally conducted on behalf of his state and NTS. All of these accomplishments were done in a spirit of honest and humble service to the association and its members. Dom D’Ascoli, ESA Vice President/President-Elect, accepted the award on Don’s behalf.

State Training Coordinator of the Year

Because of his commitment to the training activities of his Chartered Chapter, John Yusza from Connecticut was awarded State Training Coordinator of the Year. Accepting the award on John’s behalf were state Education Committee Chairman Joel Kent and Connecticut 1st Vice President Jason Sokol.

Chapter Newsletter of the Year

Maria Malice, president of the Arizona Alarm Association, accepted the award.

LLSSA President Mary Ferguson accepted the award on her behalf.

President of the Year

Because of her hard work and the ability to lead people from different backgrounds and the initiative she takes to get things done, Maria Malice was honored with the President of the Year award.  She was a driving force in doubling the chapter membership, hiring a lobbyist to work on state-wide licensing issues and making the chapter newsletter a leading newsletter among chapter newsletters.

Letter from NBFAA’s Youth Scholarship Winner

July 16th, 2009 No comments

Michael Stainbrook, first place winner in NBFAA’s Youth Scholarship Program recently sent a letter to NBFAA that we would like to share with you. Michael was recently honored at the Electronic Security Expo for his accomplishment and was presented with a $10,000 scholarship. As part of his award, NBFAA paid for him and his family to attend ESX, including airfare and a two-night hotels stay, to take part in the ceremony. Below is a letter he sent to NBFAA after the event.

I wanted to thank you and the NBFAA staff once again for the outstanding opportunities that you have given to me. Through the Youth Scholarship Program, I will attend Ohio University with minimal out-of-pocket expenses this year. This program has truly been a Godsend to my family. My room and board for my freshman year have been covered in full, and I can now attend school with peace of mind.

However, the blessings that I have received from NBFAA do not stop here. Due to the generosity of your agency, my parents and I were able to enjoy scenic Baltimore, Maryland. We explored the National Aquarium, Maritime Museum, and the Sports Legends Museum as well as Babe Ruth’s birthplace. This time with my family was very enjoyable, especially because I will be leaving home in early September for school. Thank you for allowing my family this meaningful time together. Thank you so much for covering our airfare and hotel expenses to make this possible.

I will be sure to inform NBFAA of my successes in the future, for your organization has played a major role in making my goals possible. I look forward to informing you of my future achievements and promise to represent NBFAA well during my college years. I will continue to work hard towards my goal of becoming a journalist.

Thank you again for all that you have made possible for me.

Sincerely,
Michael Stainbrook

Robert Bonifas Named 2009 William Moody Award Winner

July 16th, 2009 No comments

The Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC) announced the winner of the 2009 William N. Moody Award for outstanding excellence in the security alarm industry on June 23, 2009, at the Electronic Security Expo (ESX) in Baltimore, MD. Industry veteran Robert A. Bonifas, President and CEO of Alarm Detection Systems, was honored for his contributions in dealing with alarm management challenges nationwide. Created in 2004 by the SIAC Board of Directors, the William N. Moody Award acknowledges individuals who unselfishly give of their time and talents to alarm management issues and who reflect the attributes of Bill Moody, including integrity, fairness and perseverance in the face of adversity.

“For over 20 years, Bob has been a leader in the alarm management dispatch reduction effort. At every turn he has provided wisdom, leadership and personal resources to our industry. His commitment is unparalleled,” said Stan Martin, Executive Director of SIAC. “Bob has served as president of the NBFAA and CSAA, was one of the founding members of SIAC and currently serves on the Board of Directors. This award is but a small tribute to a man who has added immeasurably to the professionalism and success of this industry.”

Robert Bonifas was the driving force behind the creation of the “Model Cities/Model States Project” which resulted in the development of a model alarm ordinance that is still utilized by thousands of law enforcement agencies today. As it became obvious that police departments lacked adequate computer software, Bonifas again took the lead developing the “False Alarm Analysis Program”. The FAAP is a tool to identify, monitor and correct alarm-user accounts with excessive false alarms and assist jurisdictions with billing and posting payments for alarm user permit and false alarm fines. By applying extraordinary personal effort to seek solutions at any cost, testing theories, measuring results and sharing information, Bonifas has always led by example in the alarm industry. His passion for change and diligence led to the creation of the ANSI SIA CP-01 standard, a cornerstone for alarm dispatch reduction.

“I am grateful to SIAC for recognizing my achievements in the alarm industry, but never were those achievements driven by the hope to receive accolades or awards,” stated Bonifas. “Many people in our line of work have given many hours to the progression and improvement on alarm management issues. It is my sincere honor to be associated with a man like Bill Moody, whose drive and passion were the light that showed us all the way to success.”

Congratulations to Ralph Sevinor and Rick Simpson!

July 2nd, 2009 No comments

NBFAA presented the Morris F. Weinstock Person of the Year Award to Ralph Sevinor of Wayne Alarm Systems and the Sara E. Jackson Memorial Award to Rick Simpson of Vector Security during the Weinstock/Jackson Awards Ceremony at ESX on June 22.

Ralph Sevinor: 2008 Morris F. Weinstock Person of the Year Award Recipient

During his tenure in the security industry, Sevinor has willingly embraced tasks with uncommon grace and humility. As the 2008 Morris F. Weinstock Person of the Year Award winner, he exemplifies the qualities and characteristics the award was designed to recognize.

First presented in 1970, the Morris F. Weinstock Memorial Award is nationally acclaimed as the most prestigious honor in the industry. The family of the NBFAA co-founder and past president initiated the award’s creation. In memory of Weinstock’s contributions to the industry, this award is presented in grateful appreciation for outstanding individual achievement and continued efforts on behalf of the association and the industry.

Sevinor has been involved in the electronic security industry longer than he’s been able to legally drive. Starting his career while still enrolled in junior high school and the age of 14, his first system was installed in his parents’ home after it was burglarized.

His love for electronics and everything electrical led him to a technological solution for his parents’ peace of mind and thus was born his company, Wayne Alarm Systems. Today, Wayne Alarm Systems grosses approximately $7 million annually, employs 84 “team members” and has its own UL- and FM-listed central station.

A member of NBFAA since 1978, Sevinor currently serves on the NBFAA Board of Directors and is the co-chair of the NBFAA Historical Committee. This year, he raised his level of participation to new heights through his recent election to the NBFAA Executive Committee. In addition to his work on committees, Sevinor has been instrumental in raising non-dues revenue for NBFAA. In conjunction with ADI, he created the Promotional Products Program which generated more than $36,000 for the association.

He is an ardent historian, collecting and cataloging some of the industry’s oldest artifacts, and is an active participant in shaping local alarm ordinances that are not only effective in reducing false dispatches but are fair for municipalities, alarm companies and consumers.

Sevinor’s dedication to the alarm industry, his distinguished performance for the betterment of the industry, his leadership roles on both national and state association committees and his tireless support of NBFAA led to his nomination and ultimate selection as this year’s Weinstock award winner.

Rick Simpson: 2009 Sara E. Jackson Memorial Award Recipient

The 2008 Sara E. Jackson Memorial Award was presented to Simpson for his outstanding leadership as chair of the NBFAA Standards Committee.

The Sara E. Jackson Memorial Award is named in honor of the 1950-51 NBFAA President and is presented annually to an NBFAA committee chairperson who has displayed outstanding leadership.

Simpson began his career in inventory control with Vector Security in 1984 and for the past 25 years, has moved up the corporate ladder as a dedicated employee. His position as vice president of technical compliance made him an excellent choice to chair NBFAA’s Standards Committee.

Since taking the Standards Committee reins in 2008, Simpson has worked on recruiting qualified members for participation in the committee’s efforts and has added four new members representing alarm manufacturing and installing companies.

His committee’s primary focus on the development process for building and security/fire alarm codes helped convince the International Code Council (ICC) to overturn two recommendations, resulting in a big win for the security industry and public safety. Simpson continues to be diligent in the matter of code development, ensuring that NBFAA is involved in any code discussions that could impact members’ businesses.

The Statue of Liberty (1886) dramatizes the political and economic opportunity available to U.S. citizens and Ellis Island (1892) the mass migration from all parts of the world embracing opportunity.

Brink’s Home Security Wins Stevie Award

July 2nd, 2009 No comments

Brink’s Home Security’s Monitoring Department was presented with a Stevie Award for “Customer Service Contact Center of the Year for centers over 100 seats” during the third annual Stevie Awards for Sales & Customer Service.

Brink’s Home Security’s award-winning Monitoring Department, with centers located in Irving, Texas, and Knoxville, Tennessee, provides rapid response and peace of mind to over 1.3 million residential and commercial customers. Brink’s Home Security’s state-of-the-art central stations are Underwriter Laboratory-listed (UL), fully redundant, and feature industry-leading alarm handling software.

The Monitoring Department won this award for delivering the highest level of service during the replacement of the monitoring application software “Stages,” developed in partnership with SGS, located in Irvine, California. “This new platform enables us to deliver expanded products and services to our customers” said Carole Vanyo, Senior Vice President of Customer Operations with Brink’s Home Security. Brink’s Home Security was also recognized for providing outstanding service to their customers in the face of the disasters that occurred during Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

“We are honored to receive this award. It is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of our employees in protecting the lives and property of our customers,” said Vanyo.

“This year’s honorees demonstrate that even in challenging economic times, it’s possible for organizations to continue to shine in sales and customer service, the two most important functions in business: acquiring and keeping customers,” said Michael Gallagher, President of the Stevie Awards.

Details about the Stevie Awards for Sales & Customer Service and the list of honorees in all categories are available at www.stevieawards.com/sales.

NBFAA and Chapters Honor Students of Police and Fire Fighters

June 11th, 2009 No comments

Children of police officers and firefighters from Ohio, New Jersey, California and South Dakota were awarded $21,000 in scholarships by through the Youth Scholarship Program. Since its inception, the Youth Scholarship Program has awarded more than $290,000 in scholarships.

Michael Stainbrook of Toledo, Ohio was the overall winner of the contest and received a $10,000 scholarship for his outstanding essay and scholastic achievements. A standout senior at St. John’s Jesuit High School, Michael has dedicated himself to his academic career. His leadership efforts in school clubs and church functions combined with his volunteer community service activities showed Michael’s deep sense of civic duty that was most certainly handed down by his father Steven, a firefighter with the Toledo Fire & Rescue Division.

In his essay Michael wrote, “In a world of economic and moral volatility, having a constant role model is a true blessing. Storms may rock the region in multiple forms, but I firmly believe that no calamity could defeat my father’s levelheadedness and wisdom. The same is true of Toledo: when hope appears to be vanishing, I am comforted in the knowledge that my father is protecting the most vulnerable citizens in the community. Dad is a truly dependable man, and his guardianship has greatly benefitted all with whom he has worked.”

Brooke Schneider of Colonia, NJ was awarded second place and received a $7,500 scholarship. An active senior at Bishop George Ahr High School, Brooke is the co-editor-in-chief for the school newspaper and vice president of the Christian Social Action Club. She has served as student council vice president, sophomore class president and student ambassador.

Brooke’s father, William, is an officer with the Woodbridge Township Police Department. In her essay, Brooke wrote of her father, “He has always taught my brothers and me to be loyal, honest, hardworking, obedient, grateful, brave and independent – character strengths that he grew to adopt during his career as a police officer and that he consistently demonstrates through his words and actions. My dad’s strength of character, which he developed throughout his career serving the public as a police officer has inspired me for years and has shaped me into the young woman I am today.”

Alexis Arnold of Claremont, CA and a senior at Claremont High School was the third place winner and received a $2,500 scholarship. Her high school career is highlighted with numerous awards and honors. She’s the winner of the 2005 Renaissance Award, 2006 Rotary Youth Community Excellence Award, 2006 LA Opera Contest, 2008 Heart of the Hand Award, 2008 Rotary Youth Leadership Award and 2008 AP Scholar Award with Distinction.

Her father, Spencer, is a sergeant with the Newport Beach Police Department. In her essay Alexis wrote, “I know where my dad’s priorities stand – in providing a safe environment not only for his precinct, but also for his personal precinct, otherwise known as home. And because of this balance my dad has been able to find, I am proud to see him wear that silver badge of outright courage.”

In addition to the national scholarships, each of the state winners receives a scholarship from their state association. Students who reside in states without a chartered NBFAA chapter or in a state with non-participating state association submit their applications directly to the NBFAA and from them one is chosen to compete against the state winners as the national nominee. The national nominee is awarded a $1,000 scholarship to honor that individual’s achievement. This year’s national nominee was Lindsey Heitkamp, a senior at Washington High School in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Currently, a dozen chapters participate in the national program. These states conduct local and state programs and their top student competes for the national NBFAA scholarships. The state programs generally award $1,000 or more to their winners. This year, students across the nation were awarded more than $45,000 in scholarships.
