Pittsburgh – an exciting venue for ESX 2010!

February 18th, 2010 No comments

By Melissa M. Courville, Client Services & Head of Marketing, DICE Corporation

Finding out that Pittsburgh is the next stop for the industry-changing ESX conference was a thrill!  Having lived in Pittsburgh for a few years, with family ties to the area, it’s easy to fall in love with the city that mixes both history and the NOW, harmoniously. From the architecture of the widely-renowned PPG building, Heinz Ketchup factory and Andy Warhol museum, to the bustling shops at Station Square and beauty of Point Park, Pittsburgh was deservedly voted one of the safest and cleanest cities in the United States, and has been for years.

ESX has already become a highlight in my plans, where security life meets industry-specific networking.  The ESX event continues to be a focal point for security integration and monitoring companies with showcases for the ESA Weinstock/Jackson Awards, CSAA anniversary and the SDM Gala, as well as the niche-focused tradeshow, seminars and conferences.  As the head of marketing for DICE Corporation, I’m very glad that we’ve continued to invest in and make it our commitment to attend each event.  The rewards are priceless.

Big Bashing and Club Crawling Mean Major Networking Opportunities at Expo

Pittsburgh will buzz this summer as Electronic Security Expo (ESX) attendees mix, mingle and move the industry forward. On June 16, the Expo – praised for its valuable networking opportunities – will host two special events: the ESX Big Bash and ESX Crawl.

“If you’re in the security industry, the ESX Big Bash and ESX Crawl are premier events for networking with other security professionals,” says John Knox, president of Knox Integrated Systems. “At these events we’ll have a good time, forget about business for a while and build relationships. I’m looking forward to all the new and familiar faces I’ll be seeing in the beautiful city of Pittsburgh this summer.”

Attendees will kick off the night at 6 p.m. with the ESX Big Bash, held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

ESX Big Bash

Named the “best electronic security industry party of the year,” the ESX Big Bash will include beverages, hors d’oeuvres and live music by The Atlantic All Star Band. Vocalists of this 5-time Emmy Award-Nominated band have toured and recorded with popular artists, including Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Steven Tyler and Elton John. The event, sponsored by Broadview Security and Security America RRG, will conclude in time for dinner and some crawling through the animated city of Pittsburgh.

7th Annual Golf Classic Returns to Vegas

February 18th, 2010 No comments

Enjoy Guiltless Golfing with AIREF

The 7th Annual Alarm Industry Research & Educational Foundation (AIREF) golf tournament will be held March 23, 2010 at the Revere Golf Club in Las Vegas, one day prior to ISC West. The tournament promises players a casual golf outing with other industry professionals while supporting AIREF initiatives in the process.

AIREF, an all-volunteer nonprofit foundation, was created in 1977 by ESA to serve as the research arm of the industry and funding for the foundation is derived almost solely from the golf tournament. In 2003, AIREF and ESA founded the tournament as a way to help raise money for industry research.

Research studies funded by AIREF include a survey of Salt Lake City residents that showed 65 percent of registered voters disapprove of the city’s verified response ordinance and a more recent study by Rutgers University that proved scientifically that residential burglar alarms deter crime.

To register for the tournament, visit www.airef.org. For more information about the tournament and sponsorship opportunities, call (203) 762-2444 or email Pat Remes at premes@airef.org.

Electronic Security Expo Sets Trend Among World’s Leaders!

September 25th, 2009 No comments

After ESX announces its plans, G-20 taps Pittsburgh for upcoming summit

The Electronic Security Expo (ESX) 2010 Where Leaders are Made is already living up to its name.

The G-20 Summit, a gathering comprised of the world’s leaders from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the U.K. and the United States, has chosen Pittsburgh for its September 24 and 25 meeting – confirming our choice as the host city of the 2010 ESX.

With every city in the world available to host this historic event, why did the G-20, countries that represent 85 percent of the world’s economy, choose Pittsburgh?  According to White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, “It’s an area that has seen its share of economic woes in the past, but because of foresight and investment is now renewed – giving birth… to the jobs of the future.”

That may be the official line but we know they chose Pittsburgh because they can get a sandwich six inches tall packed with meat and cheese and stuffed with french fries and cole slaw at one of the world’s best places to pig out, Primanti Brothers.  We also know that they probably want to party at Pure, the nightclub located above Isoldi’s Italian restaurant featuring three-bars, multiple bottle lounges and a glass dance floor.

World leaders know that when they get bored, they can sneak out to see the Andy Warhol museum or ride original 1877 cable cars up the Duquesne Incline to see the view ranked by USA Today as the second most beautiful in America. Sure, Pittsburgh is home to 100+ billion-dollar companies and has been called one of America’s most livable cities, but world leaders really want to have a screaming good time at Kennywood, one of only two amusement parks in the country designated as a National Historic Landmark. Or they may want to pause for a moment to enjoy what they don’t have time to appreciate when they’re home – exotic and rare birds from their own countries at the National Aviary.

G-20 attendees wish they could view our personal video tour of Pittsburgh, hosted by Pam Petrow of Vector Security and Russ Cersosimo of Guardian Protection, but we’re reserving it for your eyes only at www.esxweb.com/video.

You can be a part of this international trend to have a working vacation.  Join us at the 2010 ESX June 14 – 18 in Pittsburgh:  Where leaders are made!  For ESX exhibiting information, please contact Shannon Murphy at 508-618-4224, smurphy@ae-ventures.com. ESX Grows More than 25 Percent

July 2nd, 2009 No comments

The Electronic Security Expo (ESX), owned by the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) and NBFAA, recently released preliminary figures showing strong growth for the second year of the annual event. Exhibit space and total attendance at the event both grew more than 25 percent vs. 2008 — 148 exhibiting and sponsoring companies filled just shy of 50,000 gross square feet of space, and more than 2,100 industry professionals attended the event, including roughly half of the 100 largest installing and monitoring companies in the nation.

“In a tough year for the economy and almost any kind of event, we are thrilled to have grown ESX substantially in both vendor support and turnout,” said ESX Expo Chair, George De Marco. “A standing room only keynote address, crowded special events like the NBFAA Weinstock & Jackson Awards ceremony and reception, the CSAA Central Station Excellence Awards Breakfast, the ESX Ice Breaker Luncheon and the ESX Big Bash, and well attended seminars throughout the ESX program demonstrate the ESX concept is taking hold.”

Exhibitors were pleased with the quality of the attendees, rebooking the equivalent of 66% of the show floor space reserved in 2009 for the 2010 event, and better than tripling their priority period bookings of sponsorships for 2010.

• Platinum sponsors for 2010 include the CentraLarm Group of Companies, ESC Central and Honeywell.
• Gold sponsors for 2010 include ADI, DSC, Risco Group, Security America Risk Retention Group and Uplink.
• SureView Systems will again be the Exhibit Hall Sponsor
• ESX Seminar Track Sponsors for 2010 include Honeywell, SurGard and Videofied
• ESX Big Bash sponsors for 2010 include ADI, Brink’s Home Security and Security America Risk Retention Group
• Other 2010 sponsors include: DMP, Optex, OzVision, Rapid Response and WYNIT, Inc.

Hundreds of industry professionals attended the 100+ ESX seminars and exhibitor-offered training sessions Mon. through Thu. The Next Generation Monitoring Boot Camp, sponsored by SureView Systems, was particularly well-received.

Conference attendee praise included the following:
• “Tracking Job Costs” delivered by John Brady – Excellent speaker with real hands on experience – practical information.
• “Wanted, Good Employees, Long-Term Relationship Desired” delivered by Dan Budinoff – Was an HR manager for two years at my company and still am very involved in recruiting and the class still gave me good info to use at the company. Good tips and practical guide.
• “Focusing Sales for Effectiveness, Service Agreements” delivered by Alan Kruglak – Very good! Kept me interested, lots of info I can take back to work.
• “Your Company on Trial!” by Jeff Zwirn – Awesome! Gave a lot of thought provoking information.
• “Ways to Help Minimize Your Liability When Providing Central Station Monitoring Services” by Jeff Zwirn – Excellent speaker, enthusiastic, passionate, knowledgeable. Best class and presenter of the whole expo! Top notch – thanks for including him as a presenter.
• “Leveraging Analytics for Remote Video Monitoring” by Charlie Pierce – Powerful speaker, great motivator, made course very interesting.

The ESX Ice Breaker Luncheon produced a highlight on Tue. June 23. Featured speaker, James Johnson, Chief of Police for Baltimore, Maryland, provided one of the most positive endorsements for private security ever provided by a public safety official, characterizing the private security industry as a partner in fighting crime and calling for an expansion of mandates for high-quality video surveillance in retail and banking.

Keynote speaker, General Electric Chief Security Officer, Francis X. Taylor, offered an inside look at the goals and concerns of a Fortune 100 head of security, including tips on how integration companies can put themselves in a better position to win work from such companies by focusing on integrated solutions.

Musical artist Jonathan McEuen entertained ESX attendees at the ESX Big Bash and later in the evening with an acoustic set performed at the final destination of the ESX Crawl.

ESX 2010 will take place June 14-18 at the David Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA.

Getting Security Sales Pros to Work with Installers

Today, in Baltimore at the Electronic Security Expo (ESX), I had a chance to sit on a session titled “The salesperson is not the enemy” by John Brady of TRG Associates – a business management company focused on our industry. ESX Show Report

Despite slow economy, show builds momentum.

The Electronic Security Expo concluded Thursday, June 25 after bringing together many alarm dealers and security systems integrators. The training sessions were excellent as always. The networking was priceless. The tradeshow floor attendance seemed somewhat affected by a down economy (it’s tough to commit to travel to a show during slow economic times), but even with light traffic there, businesses told me they were finding new partners and resellers.

The show is primarily driven by attendance of NBFAA and CSAA members, but walking the show floor and attending the sessions, it’s clear that these folks aren’t just traditional burglar alarm installation and monitoring companies. On the monitoring side, we talked to quite a few companies who had added analytics into their central stations, in addition to things like managed access control, hosted video, GPS tracking and more. Talking with a couple of industry old-timers who were at the show, I was overwhelmed to hear them say how excited they were that the industry is changing, that the technology is changing, and that some of the business models are changing. Our coverage of the Electronic Security Expo appears here, and we want to remind you to mark your calendars for the 2010 ESX in Pittsburgh, June 14-18.
