Rep. Michael A. Arcuri to Speak at NBFAA Luncheon
Congressman Introduced Key Life Safety Legislation in 2007
Irving, Texas, April 25, 2008 – Rep. Michael Arcuri (D-N.Y.) will be the guest speaker April 30 at a luncheon hosted by the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA). Arcuri, who represents the 24th district of New York, has sponsored legislation to provide nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospices with resources to professionally upgrade fire detection and suppression equipment and ensure the safety of their residents.
“NBFAA is honored and pleased to have Representative Arcuri speak at our Day on Capitol Hill this year. In his short time in office, he has proven himself to be a friend of small business, law enforcement agencies and our industry, “ said George P. Gunning, NBFAA President. “We have been working with the congressman since last year to garner support for his bill which we believe will greatly benefit some of our most vulnerable citizens.”
In a recent article in NBFAA’s quarterly magazine, Arcuri provided the following regarding his bill: “According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 2,800 fires are reported per year in nursing homes — or roughly one for every six nursing homes. We must make sure our seniors are protected from fire right where they live. That is why I introduced the “Long-Term Care Life Safety Act” (H.R. 2882), which would establish a demonstration incentive competitive grant program within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to promote professional retrofit installation of fire detection systems and fire prevention technologies in nursing homes, hospice centers, and assisted living facilities. The bill would allow facilities access to federal funds to upgrade fire prevention systems and meet new requirements by authorizing $40 million for each fiscal year 2008 through 2012.”
The NBFAA Day on Capitol Hill begins in Washington D.C. at a Welcome Reception at the St. Gregory Luxury Hotel & Suites on April 29. The luncheon will be at the Capitol Host (Room B-339B) inside the Rayburn House office building.
This is the second year in a row for the NBFAA event. In addition to the lunch, participants will meet with their elected officials and network with their peers during other activities.
NBFAA’s sponsors for the Day on Capitol Hill include: Honeywell (Congressional Directory, Tour and Lunch sponsor); Security America Risk Retention Group (Night Tour sponsor); Altronix (Welcome Reception sponsor) and ADI (Breakfast sponsor).
