NBFAA Presents 2005 Morris F. Weinstock
and 2006 Sara E. Jackson Awards
Industry Advocates Mel Mahler and Paul Baran Receive Honors

Irving, Texas, April 5, 2006 – The National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) presented the Morris F. Weinstock and Sara E. Jackson awards—two of the Association’s most coveted honors—during an evening event hosted by NBFAA and the Alarm Industry Research & Educational Foundation (AIREF) in Las Vegas, Tuesday, April 4, 2006.

The 2005 Morris F. Weinstock Person of the Year Award was presented to Mel Mahler, in recognition of a lifetime of service to the electronic life safety, security and systems industry.

“Volunteerism doesn’t stop with Mel, he ensures that each of his ADS security branches are actively involved in and strongly supportive of their local and state association,” NBFAA President Scot Colby said. “He has gone beyond the call of duty, worked whole-heartedly as a volunteer and a leader and for that, we thank him.”

Mahler founded ADS Security, L.P. in 1989. Headquartered in Nashville, Tenn., ADS is the 23rd largest electronic security alarm firm in the United States and operates 12 offices located in Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and Georgia, serving nearly 59,000 commercial and residential customers.

First presented in 1970, the Morris F. Weinstock Person of the Year Award is nationally acclaimed as the most prestigious honor in the industry. The family of the NBFAA cofounder and past president initiated the award’s creation to honor Weinstock’s contributions.

The 2005 Sara E. Jackson Award was presented to NBFAA Education Committee Chairman, Paul Baran, in recognition of his outstanding leadership as a committee chairperson for the NBFAA.

The award is named in honor of the 1950-51 NBFAA President and is presented annually to an NBFAA committee chair who has displayed outstanding leadership.

Baran, a Pennsylvania native, began teaching in 1987 and since then has been actively involved in many NBFAA Committees, most specifically the Education Committee, since 1994. He has also held various subcommittee chair seats on the NBFAA Fire Section and Membership Committees.

“The leadership and dedication Paul brings impacts the association and industry on many levels,” said NBFAA Executive Director Merlin Guilbeau. “Under Paul’s chairmanship, we have adopted new National Training School (NTS) guidelines, expanded course offerings to include topics like CCTV, residential integration and business skills courses.”
