The National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association Invites Participants to Join the Coalition to Secure America

NBFAA Announces Industry Coalition to Support “Secure America’s Homes and Businesses Act”

Irving, Texas, Oct. 10, 2005 – The National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) invites industry participants and interested individuals to join the association in a Coalition to Secure America. The initial goal of the coalition is to support federal legislation recently introduced by Rep. Steven LaTourette (R-OH).

Entitled "Secure America's Homes and Businesses Act,” the legislation, HR 3632, provides a tax deduction of up to $5,000 for residential taxpayers and $50,000 for commercial building owners for the purchase and professional installation of electronic premise security devices.

“We’ve already received positive responses from manufacturers and other industry groups. We’re expecting a strong coalition that will support our grassroots efforts to impact this proposed bill,” said NBFAA Executive Director, Merlin Guilbeau.

“We strongly urge everyone interested in boosting the vitality of residential and commercial security, to step up and join this Coalition,” explained NBFAA Director of Government Relations, John Chwat. NBFAA will blaze the trail, but strength in numbers is key to making an impact with Congress.”

NBFAA’s Government Relations department worked closely with Rep. LaTourette on the HR 3632 legislation and recommended language to the Congressman. This is just one of several ongoing efforts undertaken this year as part of the association’s ramped-up lobbying efforts through a partnership with veteran lobbyist Chwat, President of Chwat & Company, Inc., Alexandria, Va.

The security devices defined in HR 3632 would include electronic fire/life safety, intrusion detection alarms or burglar alarms, video surveillance cameras and equipment, access controls including biometrics and automated fingerprint identification systems and any components, wiring, system displays, terminals or other equipment to install these devices. The taxpayer’s property can include any structure or dwelling used for commercial or residential purposes including parking lots and other areas. This bill seeks to assist taxpayers, both business and individual, in meeting the challenges of homeland security, as well as crime prevention by securing tax credit for devices professionally installed at these locations.
