Mike Miller Sworn In as NBFAA President Starting July 1, 2008

NBFAA announced the results of the 2008 Executive Committee elections at the Electronic Security Expo (ESX) and swore in new officers during the association’s general membership meeting. The new terms began July 1.

Mike Miller, vice president and co-owner of Moon Security Services Inc, Pasco, Wash., was sworn in as president.  An industry executive for more than 30 years, Miller’s involvement with NBFAA includes past chair and/or co-chair of the Public Relations, False Alarm, Budget, and Investment Committees. Miller served NBFAA as treasurer of the association from 2000 through 2001 and from 2005 through June, 2007 and is the 2005 recipient of the NBFAA Sara E. Jackson Memorial Award. His industry involvement at the state level includes serving as president and past president of the Washington Burglar & Fire Alarm Association.  Miller served one year in his role as vice president/president elect.

“My first goal as the 38th president of the NBFAA is to ensure that our legacy continues and that we mentor new leaders and work with our chapters to help our members prosper and grow.  I am following some great men and women and I am particularly indebted to George Gunning.  I have some big shoes to fill following all that he has done.  He has set the bar high – as have so many of our leaders – and I look forward to working hard during the next two years to continue that standard of excellence and servant leadership,” said incoming President Miller.

He added this challenge to all NBFAA members: “I challenge all members of the association – indeed all in our industry – to continue moving forward, knowing that what we do DOES make a difference in the lives of so many of our fellow citizens.  We work alongside our public safety partners to protect and to serve.  Let’s never forget that.”

Meet the other newly and reelected members of the Executive Committee.

John Knox, president/co-owner, Life & Property Security Systems Inc, Knoxville, Tenn., was reelected for a 2-year term as secretary.

Charles “Dom” D’Ascoli, president, Smoky Mountain Systems Inc,Franklin, N.C., was reelected to for a 2-year term as vice president.

RMR Recurring Theme at ESX

Here on the opening day of the first annual Electronic Security Expo, attendees repeatedly heard the message that they need to add recurring monthly revenue to their business model. In seminar sessions that were often so crowded people were standing along the walls, presenters such as Harvey Eisenstadt and Bob Harris of Attrition Busters, Pete Celano of Alarm.com, Pam Petrow of Vector Security, and John Tedesco of Contigo emphasized the high gross margin a recurring revenue model can create and the value that RMR adds to a business.

ESX Recap

The inaugural ESX, the Electronic Security Expo, has been held this [past] week in Nashville, Tenn., and overall has been a very strong show. Owned by the Central Station Alarm Association (the CSAA membership roster which includes many of the top alarm monitoring providers in the U.S.) and the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (which has in its ranks many of the top security and fire installing dealers and integrators), the show served as a training ground, a product expo and a place for the associations to handle their annual meetings and business.

Being held shortly after the ISC West show which occurred in Las Vegas this past April, it's useful to compare the two shows. For one, ESX is purely an installing/integrating and monitoring show. While ISC West has evolved into a massive show that brings together both end-users and dealers/integrators, the ESX program is focused very specifically on a subset of our market. And while traffic here at ESX is much smaller than at ISC West, there is still quite a bit of business being done here and on the couches in the adjoining hotel lobby. In fact, I have speculated that, based on the number of top monitoring and installing companies here, we're probably seeing representatives from companies that do well over 50 percent of the total business in our installing and monitoring industries. The smaller show size has definitely given this event a very personal, family-like feel. In sum, don't expect the "buzz" that you get about technologies at the ISC West show, but understand also, I think, that this show is driven by training and networking, not technology.

Asked whether the show has "legs", a number of dealers and exhibiting manufacturers said they thought it did, but would need to address issues such as event, education sessions and tradeshow schedule overlaps to ensure that attendees will be able to not only receive their much needed training, but also have more time to visit with product exhibitors on the tradeshow floor. The general attitude from the crowd has been that the training was quite good, with ESX sorting pure educational training from exhibitor training sessions, but promoting both as a value for the attendees.

The 2009 ESX show is planned for June in Baltimore, Md.

I want to close my summary of ESX (you can see our content on our ESX 2008 coverage page), with a quote from outgoing NBFAA President George Gunning, who told attendees before the Cris Carter keynote:

"Starting this show is a leap that the industry should have taken a long time ago. This show is for the betterment of you, your business and the industry."

Gunning said that for the NBFAA, any profits from the show will be invested directly back into the organization to help fund association programs such as apprenticeship training for alarm technicians.

North American Video and Wynn go Three for Three

Design, quality and attention to detail are just a few of the adjectives used to illustrate how the new Encore at Wynn Las Vegas will maintain its distinctive brand and position in the marketplace.  And these very same qualities are what North American Video (NAV) is bringing to this latest addition to the Las Vegas Strip for their security operations.

As recently announced by NAV’s President, Cynthia Freschi, NAV has been contracted to design, supply and install a complementary video surveillance and security system at the Encore at Wynn Las Vegas.  The 2,034 all-suite hotel tower will be fully integrated with Wynn Las Vegas’ security operations covering the Encore’s 72,000 square foot casino, additional convention and meeting spaces as well as five restaurants, seven bars and lounges, a nightclub, swimming pools, a spa and salon, and 11 retail outlets.

The security and surveillance system at the Encore at Wynn Las Vegas will have a Honeywell 1536 x 64 Security Matrix Switch and a 1024 x 64 Surveillance Matrix Switch installed in the Encore’s Data Center.  The systems will be tied back to the existing security and surveillance systems at Wynn Las Vegas using fiber and a satellite connection.  In addition to providing security and surveillance monitoring of the new resort, the new system will also provide coverage for the new employee parking facility and the pedestrian bridge linking it to the resort.

The new Wynn Encore is scheduled to open in December, 2008.
