Make History with NBFAA
Plans are underway for NBFAA’s 60th Anniversary celebration, which will begin in 2008. Part of this celebration will include the publishing of an NBFAA Tribute Book that will illustrate the association’s history, as well as the industry’s. All 2008 members will receive a copy, and we will be distributing at the inaugural ESX event in Nashville. (For information about ESX go here.)
One of the highlights of the Tribute Book will be stories about the many multi-generational companies that have helped our industry grow. But we need your help to tell those stories. Please contact us if your family’s company spans multiple generations. We want to feature YOU.
Also, we are hoping to highlight as many of the long-time NBFAA member companies as we can. So please, let us hear your stories, how long you’ve been in business and where you want your company and the industry to go. If you have photos of your company when it first started and what it is like today, send those as well.
 |
We also have a photo that we would like to know more about. If you recognize the photo, or if you or someone you know is in the photo, then please call us and tell us all about it. If you are having trouble viewing the photo, download a hi-res version.
It has been an exciting 60 years and with your help we can make it a memorable celebration. To help contribute to this project, contact us today at (888) 447-1689 or send an e-mail to communications@alarm.org.
Finally, start thinking about supporting this project with a tribute sponsorship ad or product ad in the Tribute Book. Check out the opportunities here.

NYBFAA Presents Annual President’s Award
During the recently concluded ISC East event, the New York Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NYBFAA) presented its annual President’s Award to John Lombardi, president of CIA Security and a past president of the NYBFAA.
Current NYBFAA President Tim Creenan recognized Lombardi for his years of industry involvement, serving as:
- President of NYBFAA
- Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) representative on the National Fire Protection Association Committee For Premise Security
- CSAA Education Committee co-chair and on the CSAA Executive Board
- Founder of the Mid Hudson Alarm Association in Dutchess County, N.Y. where he presently serves as treasurer.
Under Lombardi’s leadership, the association, which was nearly bankrupt, turned its focus towards vital industry training, hired a new executive director, saw more active committees and a new attitude that now serves its members and industry with quality services.
Creenan, in presenting the award, recalled Lombardi’s first board meeting as president, where he said, “Things are going to be different now.”
“John’s vision of the future remains what it has always been, education, involvement and commitment,” Creenan added.

Ohio Gets Licensing Passed State House of Representatives
On Oct. 10, the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 41 concerning licensing the providers of services relating to security, life-safety or locksmith services in Ohio with a vote of 82 to 14.
The Ohio Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (OBFAA) wishes to thank the sponsor of this bill, State Representative Joe Uecker (R-66), and his aide Sheila Ross, both of whom have invested tireless effort to reach this landmark. “We also wish to thank our lobbyist Ron Stake. Ron has proven invaluable to the Association's legislative process and taken our licensing effort to a level never before achieved,” said Beverly (Bev) Bailey, OBFAA Executive Director.
“Many dealers, both members and non-members have participated in the process through testimony to the committee and their letters and phone calls to their representatives. These dealers made a tremendous difference in accomplishing this milestone,” added Bailey.
Though House Bill 41 has passed the House of Representatives, the process is not over. The bill will now proceed to the Ohio Senate. OBFAA will continue to work with Uecker and Ross to lobby the State Senate for passage of this important legislation. Continued support from the dealers will be key in helping OBFAA realize their goal of a state license that works for alarm dealers.

PDQ Program to Honor Those Who Fight False Alarms
Companies dedicated to reducing false alarms are invited to enter the 2008 Police Dispatch Quality (PDQ) award program. Entries are being accepted through Dec. 1.
Sponsored by the Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC), False Alarm Reduction Association (FARA) and Security Sales & Integration, the honor recognizes alarm installing and monitoring businesses for establishing practices that help prevent false dispatches.
Brink’s Home Security captured the 2007 award for achieving exceptionally low false police dispatches in Montgomery County (Md.). You can read about Brink’s winning ways in the May 2007 issue of SSI.
Examples of police department and security company cooperation are being collected to help create best practices guidelines in the PDQ program, and dealers and integrators are invited to share their winning stories.
The winning alarm company will be recognized in a hometown ceremony along with a local law enforcement representative and will receive $1,000 courtesy of Honeywell to travel to Las Vegas for next year’s ISC West to receive their award at the 2008 SAMMY Awards. SSI will also honor the victorious company with an article in the magazine.
