NBFAA Joins the Government Withholding Relief Coalition and Urges Support for the Long-Term Care Life Safety Act

The NBFAA has joined 68 other organizations to form the Government Withholding Relief Coalition to repeal Section 511 of the Tax Increase Prevention and Reconciliation Act of 2005.

Section 511 mandates the sweeping new requirement that federal, state, and local governments withhold three percent of their payments for goods and services. The NBFAA and the rest of the coalition believe Section 511 will have particularly harmful consequences to many industries, if it is allowed to become effective.

The coalition supports H.R. 1023, legislation introduced by Representatives Kendrick Meek (D-FL) and Wally Herger (R-CA), which would repeal the withholding requirement. This bipartisan legislation has 179 cosponsors, many of them members of the House Committee on Ways and Means.

NBFAA also urges its membership to support the Long-Term Care Life Safety Act (H.R. 2882). NBFAA has informed the public of the importance of this legislation through the recent distribution of a press release. The Long-Term Care Life Safety Act, introduced recently at the request of the NBFAA, is designed to establish a grant program within the Department of Health and Human Services to promote professional retrofit installation of fire alarm detection systems and other fire prevention technologies in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and hospice facilities.

Chapter President Spotlight: Mike Weiland, Iowa

Iowa president, Mike Weiland, general manager for Per mar Security, believes membership involvement is the key to any association’s success.

“Involvement by all members makes our association stronger,” Weiland said. “The association doesn’t simply represent one company, or one individual, it represents us all and we must all take part equally.”

Weiland began his career in 1989 working on bank ATMs and security systems at Lefebure which was later purchased by Diebold. He began working for Per Mar Security three years ago and joined the Iowa Alarm Association.

As president, Weiland wants to see more standardized training in Iowa such as the Level I and Level II certifications offered through NBFAA’s National Training School.

News from Iowa: Chapter Scores Legislative Victory
Iowa was recently able to defeat licensing legislation that would have placed the industry under the control of the electrical contractors. Instead, the association managed to have the bill changed to place them under the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s code 100C. In addition, the association has been asked to offer names of individuals involved in security, intrusion and fire alarm industries for placement on the board.

Martin and Fletcher to be Honored at Tri-Association Awards Dinner

Stan Martin, executive director of the Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC) and George Fletcher, president of DMF Consulting, will be honored at the Festival of Lanterns, the 2007 Tri-Association Awards Dinner in New York City on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at The Lighthouse on Chelsea Pier 61.

Hosted jointly by the NBFAA, the Security Industry Association (SIA) and the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA), this year’s event will bring the delights and wonders of the eastern world to the banks of the Hudson River.

Stan Martin

Martin will be honored with the Triton Award, which was established in 2004 to recognize an individual who has contributed significantly to the advancement of the industry though the initiatives of NBFAA, SIA and CSAA.

“I was shocked. There are just so many deserving people to choose, it caught me completely off guard,” Martin said. “What I do is supported by a lot of people. This award is more a reflection on their hard work and dedication.”

Martin has worked in the alarm industry for 31 years and has been involved in the alarm dispatch reduction effort for more than 20 years. He is the chairman of the False Alarm Reduction Committee for the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He is also the recipient of the NBFAA’s two highest individual awards: the Morris F. Weinstock Person of the Year Award and the Sara E. Jackson Memorial Award.

George Fletcher

Fletcher, a past SIA treasurer and industry group chair will be presented SIA’s highest honor — the George R. Lippert Memorial Award.

“When I was first told I had won the award I was surprised, humbled and honored. It’s very special to be recognized by the peers you admire,” Fletcher said. “I’ve been very blessed with many opportunities in the industry. My involvement in SIA has given me two or three times more than what I’ve invested in it.”

Fletcher has been in the security industry for more than 20 years and has been involved in four industry start-ups, playing an important role in establishing sales and positioning strategies. His career in the security industry includes experience in South Africa, Canada and more than 30 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. He is also a former treasurer and vice-president of SIA, and co-founder and a director of Asociación Latinoamericana de Seguridad (a Latin American security association).

A portion of each ticket sale will be donated to Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE), a national, non-profit organization, created by students for students, that promotes the virtues of civility and respect by helping students of all ages learn how to care for other people.

Join industry peers in recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of this year’s awards recipients. Make your reservations today at www.siaonline.org.
