NBFAA Business Focus Spotlight: Growing your Business to the Next Level
So far we have introduced you to two of the presenters for the NBFAA Business Focus seminar in Indianapolis, June 14-15. The next presenter we’d like to introduce you to has already helped a few members grow better businesses through a training seminar co-hosted with NBFAA during the recent ISC West Expo.
Cathy Rempel |
This week we feature Cathy Rempel, founder and CEO of The Summit Group and her presentation Growing your Business to the Next Level.
This session is exclusively designed for business leaders who want to increase accountability and alignment, make their jobs easier, their companies run more smoothly, and maintain a sustainable competitive advantage and profitable growth. In this intensive and highly interactive learning experience, attendees will learn precisely what makes the difference between good and great. Three key platforms will provide the foundation for this session: attracting new business and customers, growing existing customers and securing a solid internal structure.
The main focus will be to provide tools and coaching for all participants so that they can truly implement something new on their next day back to work.
Rempel is the founder and CEO of The Summit Group, a North American strategic marketing and business building organization. A commerce graduate from the University of Calgary, her career has expanded through various marketing, sales, business building, management and executive positions over the past 26 years, including her most recent assignment with Xerox Corporation as vice president, North America Strategic Business Solutions, leading the team above a 270 percent increase in revenues.

Make Your Voice Heard: Vote
The NBFAA has mailed ballots to members for the election of new officers to serve on the NBFAA Executive Committee.
The candidates are:
Uncontested Officers:
- Mike Miller – Vice President/President-Elect
- David Koenig – Treasurer
Contested Office:
- Counte Cooley – Incumbent, Two-year Vice President
- George Bish – Challenger, Two-year Vice President
About the Candidates
 |
Mike Miller has been involved in the alarm and security industry for more than 30 years. Miller graduated from Northwest Nazarene College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration. He currently serves as vice president and co-owner of Moon Security Services Inc located in Pasco, Wash. |
 |
David Koenig has been involved in the security industry since selecting it as his career in 1981. He has held a number of management positions in firms large and small that have provided a variety of security services including electronic card access systems, burglar alarm systems, fire alarm systems, uniformed security officers and patrol services, central monitoring station services and locksmithing. His experience includes sales, system installation, project management, design, budgeting, consulting and business management. |
 |
Counte Cooley’s introduction into the alarm and security industry began as a boy back in the late 1950s, when he would hand tools and flashlights to his dad, Don Cooley. After 49 years in the business, Cooley still maintains his “Bulldog Tenacity” in everything about the company his dad once ran – Electronic Sales Co (ESC). He is also very proud of his highly skilled technicians who still hand-solder every low voltage connection.
If re-elected to serve as NBFAA vice-president, he hopes to bring to the NBFAA “table” a lifetime of experience as a company owner in the burglar and fire alarm industry, support the president with the NBFAA strategic objectives, focus his accounting experience in supporting the president with the NBFAA budget, and bring unity, a sense of community, and commitment to the common cause. |
 |
George Bish has served in the security industry for more than 22 years, beginning his career as a technician for Dalco in Pittsburgh. Since then, he has worked for several security industry companies including B & G Sound & Security (vice president and co-owner); Rollins Protective Services (service manager); Brink’s Home Security (service manager); ADT Security Services Inc (national trainer); and The System Depot (system design manager). He currently works for Advanced Technologies as a project manager, responsible for setting up licensing in various states for a start-up division of MasTec Inc.
“I think it is vital that NBFAA continues to be a leader confronting issues across the nation that affect our industry. As a group, we must continue to find ways to build relationships that will allow NBFAA to continue to be reactive on current issues affecting our industry, while at the same time becoming more proactive on issues that will influence our changing industry,” said Bish. |

Acadian On Watch Demonstrates New Technology in Sting Operation
Acadian’s Use of New Technology to Apprehend Thieves Earned Them a Finalist Spot for the 2007 First Line of Defense Award
Acadian On Watch (Acadian), a reseller for Guardian Mobile Monitoring Systems, Inc. (Guardian), aided local police in the recovery of more than $25,000 in stolen oil field equipment in October.
Acadian provided the Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment and monitoring services for the investigation conducted by the Vermillion, La. Parish Sheriff’s Office (VPSO), resulting in three arrests and the break-up of a theft ring that had been in operation since 2005.
The oil field equipment, known as chart recorders, was being stolen in batches from production sites every month. While each chart recorder is worth under $5,000, the ultimate cost of the theft can be many times that amount due to the productivity lost while the recorders are out of commission.
Acadian worked closely with the sheriff’s office to install Trimble GPS devices on several decoy chart recorders used in the field, and provided 24/7 monitoring services using the Guardian system. Acadian staff also configured Guardian’s software to automatically alert officers assigned to the case via e-mail and cell phone alerts.
On Oct. 10, one of the decoy chart recorders was stolen, and the built-in motion detector on the GPS device alerted Acadian monitoring staff and guided the sheriff’s office with updated location information directed to their cell phones during the recovery process. The stolen equipment was tracked to the thief’s location where the officers made the initial arrests. Additional arrests were made several days later, ultimately breaking up the theft ring.
“On behalf of the team here at Acadian, and particularly our Mobile Monitoring Division, we congratulate the VPSO in their success at cracking this case,” said Blane Comeaux, vice president of Monitoring Services for Acadian. “We look forward to continuing our support of the local use GPS technology to reduce losses from crime.”
NBFAA is featuring the 2007 First Line of Defense finalists online, in articles in Newsline and Member Update. For further information about the program go here.

PACE a Big Success in the Midwest
The Professional Alarm Convention and Exposition (PACE) was a great success according to those who attended the event held May 1 and 2.
“This is a fantastic show,” said Rich Blaha, The Security Source Inc. “It’s well attended and well organized. The people who attend this convention are the decision makers.”
The first multi-state event in the Midwest, PACE was hosted by the Ohio Electronic Life Safety & Security Association (OELSSA) and the Indiana Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (IBFAA).
“We were excited to be there this year. Next year’s event will be even bigger, even better,” said IBFAA President Marc Turner.
The event included a keynote luncheon featuring Ohio State Representative Joseph Ueker, sponsor of the proposed Ohio licensing law for electronic life safety providers. The luncheon also included the presentation of Ohio’s Youth Scholarship Program winners and the results of the state’s tool drive for Habitat for Humanity. A golf outing, opening reception, the Networking 101 training class, seminars and exhibits also highlighted the event.
“It’s important for chapters to get together to share information,” said John Knox NBFAA board of directors secretary and executive committee liaison. “So much of life is about vision. You have to be able to see past what already is to see what can be, and this show is going to do nothing but grow.”
