Join Us for the Inaugural NBFAA Emerging Technology Forum

Following a general member session and breakfast, NBFAA will host the inaugural NBFAA Emerging Technology Forum. The program will be held March 29, 2007 in Room 501 in the Venetian Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas from 9:00 a.m. to 9:55 a.m. and will be open to all ISC attendees.

The purpose of this event is to provide a venue for industry professionals to hear from chief executive officers and other senior leaders about their company’s emerging technology. Attendees will be introduced to new applications, markets, strategies and consumer trends, and gain technology insight with which they can grow their businesses. This year’s presenters are Jordan Serlin, president of Cenuco and Bob Diamond, CEO of Xanboo.

Each speaker will provide an overview of their company’s emerging technology, including the growth strategy, the market segmentation, the product or service applications and the distribution process. They will identify the trends that enable their products to be introduced successfully into the marketplace and provide a profile of their primary end user customers. They will also share their vision of industry trends for the next three to seven years including potential product offerings as well as challenges and opportunities.

About the Presenters:

Jordan Serlin is currently president of Cenuco Inc, a division of Ascendia Brands. Cenuco specializes in cellular software services, specifically live video transmission onto cellular handsets from closed circuit television systems. Serlin has served in this post since 2003. He is also currently a council member with the Gerson Lehrman Group, a leading think-tank comprised of executives, physicians, scientists, engineers, attorneys, and other professionals who deliver expertise and decision-making assistance to business, government and investment leaders globally.

NBFAA Offers Members Tips for Early Daylight-Saving Time

Nearly two years ago the U.S. Congress passed the Energy Policy Act of 2005 which changes the start and end dates for Daylight-Saving Time (DST) in the United States. Those states that participate in DST must follow the new dates.

As a result, DST will start on March 11, 2007 at 2:00 a.m. (three weeks earlier than normal) and end November 4, 2007 at 2:00 a.m. (one week later than previously).

There are a number of potential issues with this change that you should be aware of, including:

  • Applying updates to your computer. It is possible that the time zone settings for your computer's system clock may be incorrect during this four week period. In particular, you must make sure that both your Windows operating system and your calendar programs are updated.
  • Business applications that record transactions could be affected. Billing programs that calculate elapsed time may be at risk. You should check all your software and hardware systems that rely on time stamps. If necessary, patch with software updates or modify to work properly.
  • Try to understand all of the potential impacts to your business, including the computers, billing systems, software and any issues that may impact your customers. Then plan and execute processes to address the issue.
  • Don’t forget the little things: Employees should check appliances, such as coffee makers, microwave ovens, DVDs, and videocassette recorders that have clocks. These items may have to be reset manually.
  • Last, but not least, don’t forget to check with your manufacturers to make sure that products your customers are using won’t be affected by this change.

Alarm History 101: An Independent Headquarters

Editor’s Note: The Alarm Industry has an illustrious and interesting history going back more than 100 years. Many do not know the history of the industry that they have chosen as a profession. Because of this we have decided to include a brief look in Member Update at some of the events that have shaped the alarm industry into what it has become today. Alarm History 101 provides information on the path the industry has taken and of the ideas that have impacted it. If you have questions about our industry’s history you would like answered send an e-mail to communications@alarm.org.

After more than 20 years of relying on consultants or management firms to administer its affairs, NBFAA elected to establish its own independent headquarters in 1982.

Two Locals lend a Hand - Tom and Pat Smith of Security, Inc. of hte Washington, D.C. area helped NBFAA set up independent offices in 1982. Here they pose with there prized collection of campain buttons.

To lead the new staff, it persuaded Richard Bugbee, an ADT marketing and public relations executive who most recently had served as NBFAA treasurer, to become the executive vice president, a new position that made him NBFAA’s first full-time chief executive. For executive director, it recruited Robert Daugherty, whose management firm, Association Management Inc, had managed the Central Station Electrical Protective Association (CSEPA) for many years and NBFAA for a year and a half.

The new independent headquarters officially opened in 1984 with a full-time staff of five to manage both NBFAA and CSEPA. In order to afford the office, many of the largest NBFAA members doubled their dues payments for two years. Aritech and North Supply donated typewriters and a telephone system, and the local firm, Security Inc, installed an alarm system and otherwise helped the headquarters get started. Tom and Pat Smith, of Security Inc, in Washington D.C., contributed time, personnel and equipment.

Need an Edge? Become Certified

Competition in the alarm industry is fierce. It has been that way since the beginning. To stay in front of your competition, you need something the customer can feel good about when choosing your company.

Certified technicians show that you care about your trade and, more importantly, care about doing it well. When it comes down to picking between two equally competitive companies, the one most certified is the one most often picked.

NTS offers NBFAA members three certification opportunities for alarm technicians.

To become a Certified Alarm Technician (Level I), students must successfully complete the three-day Certified Alarm Technician course and pass the two-hour multiple choice examination.

To become a Certified Fire Alarm Technician, students must successfully complete the two-day Fire Alarm Installation Methods (FAIM) course and pass the two-hour multiple choice examination, and successfully complete the one day Life Safety Code course and pass the one-hour multiple choice examination.

To become a Certified Alarm Technician (Level II), students must hold the Level I certification, have successfully completed the FAIM course and passed the examination, and have successfully completed the two-day Advanced Burglar Alarm Technician course and passed the two-hour multiple choice examination.

For a complete list of training opportunities, course descriptions and dates available in your area visit NBFAA’s Web site at www.alarm.org.

Brink’s Home Security Wins National Award for Reducing False Alarms

Brink’s Home Security has been recognized for its program to reduce false alarms through an award sponsored by the Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC), the False Alarm Reduction Association (FARA) and Security Sales & Integration. In the national competition, the company won the Police Dispatch Quality (PDQ) award for excellence in minimizing false dispatches in Montgomery County, Md.

The award cited a number of components in Brink’s Home Security’s alarm reduction program. These included: employing new equipment standard that make keypads easier for consumers to use; two calls to customers to confirm whether a break-in has occurred before dispatching police; intense training for sales and technical personnel to ensure customers understand how best to operate their alarm system; and involvement in industry association efforts to educate consumers and other companies on best methods to reduce false alarms.

In winning the 2007 PDQ award, Brink’s was cited for a very low dispatch rate. A dispatch rate signifies how frequently an alarm system requires a call for police dispatch in a year. The national average is close to 1.0, and Brink’s Home Security’s rate in Montgomery County was .17, which places it in the top one percent of lowest dispatch rates for companies with more than 50 customers.

The PDQ program was launched to stem the false alarm problem by recognizing those installing and monitoring companies that follow established industry practices and partner with law enforcement to reduce police dispatch requests.

Olympia Officials Win National Alarm Management Award

Two members of the Olympia, Wash. Police Department received a national award Feb. 20, for helping to improve alarm management practices in their city. The Award of Distinction for Excellence in Alarm Management is given by the Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC) in recognition of innovative and successful practices that reduce the number of burglar alarm signals generating calls for police dispatch.

Dick Machlan and Laura Wohl of the Olympia Police Department (OPD) were recognized along with Chief Gary Michel and Commander Steve Nelson.

“These officials helped craft an ordinance that has reduced unnecessary police dispatches to alarms by over 70 percent – not just for a month or two, but for the entire 20 months of its existence,” said Ron Haner, Alarm Center, Inc., who presented the award for SIAC.

The successful Olympia ordinance incorporates SIAC’s “Best Practices” for reduction of unnecessary police dispatches to alarms. Those practices include annual registration, Enhanced Call Verification, adoption of the industry control panel (CP001) standard for all new installations, a fee for each response to an alarm and suspension of service for alarm sites that have more than four false alarms in a year

NICET Issues 20,000 Certifications to Fire Protection Professionals

The number of certifications for fire protection professionals passed 20,000 in Feb. 2007. The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) attributes this milestone to the fire protection industry’s commitment to public safety.

NICET joins all those who care about fire protection in congratulating each of these knowledgeable and experienced technicians for their professionalism and dedication to life safety. Attaining certification in Fire Alarm Systems, Automatic Sprinkler System Layout, Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, or Special hazards Suppression Systems requires knowledge, experience, and initiative, and NICET salutes every one of these dedicated men and women.

Just one of the ways the fire protection industry uses to increase reliability is supporting, encouraging, and using certification through NICET. Certification provides a way to measure the workforce’s skills and knowledge against a national standard. NICET offers certification to engineering technicians and technologists in Fire Alarm Systems, Automatic Sprinkler System Layout, Special Hazards Suppression Systems, and Inspection and Testing of Water Based Systems. Fire protection industry experts developed the NICET Fire Protection programs with up to four levels based on work experience, written examination, and third-part evaluations. Additional information on NICET Fire Protection certification is available at www.nicet.org.
