Grant Thayer Provides Words of Wisdom
After four years on the NBFAA Executive Committee, Grant Thayer will leave his post as NBFAA Secretary at the end of June. Thayer, an industry veteran of 37 years, says you have an obligation to return a portion of your talents and works to the industry or association that you have taken your livelihood from.
As an active participant of several NBFAA committees, he has been involved with the By-laws, Industry Affairs, National Training School, Communications, Standards, Marketing and Arms committees, and served as Chairman for the Membership Committee.
Thayer said he will miss many things about the association, but most of all, he will miss all the volunteers who serve on committees, the board members, and the paid staff. “There are some wonderful, talented and dedicated, unselfish individuals in each of these areas,” he said.
When asked what has changed the most since he began in the association, he said the professionalism.
“The association is again being recognized as an industry resource and leader,” he said.
“It has moved from a reactive to a proactive association, and now has a vision,
mission
and a long and short term plan for achieving the same.”
His own vision for the association is for it to continue to move forward as an authority and leader in the electronic life safety, security and systems world, for Security America to continue growing, and for the fulfillment of the “Envisioning Our Future” strategic plan for NBFAA.
“There is no other organization that has the resources NBFAA offers, which includes training, Government Relations experts who act as legislative watch dogs, Industry Affairs representation on issues with the National Fire Protection Association and other organizations, not to mention the many networking opportunities offered by the association.”
Thayer said the cost members pay in dues is well worth it, but many do not realize the benefits. There are so many issues out there that one person can’t spend the time, energy or have the expertise to even find out about or work on alone, he said.
“The average amount our members pay in dues could not buy an hour with a lobbyist with knowledge of the governmental system, could not buy an hour of time from a professional training course development group, could not buy an hour from the legal firm that sits at all of our meetings, and beyond that, each individual would have such a small voice when together we can shout.”
Thayer wants to encourage all members to simply, ‘get involved.’ If you want to make things better it takes YOU, he said. “Local, regional, state and national are ALL suffering from a lack of help from their membership. It is our industry, profession and trade. Shouldn’t WE want to make it better?”
In his opinion, the most important benefit of NBFAA membership is that you are no longer alone. “Together we can fight any fight; alone we are but that small voice in the wilderness.”
Will Thayer continue to be involved with NBFAA? “The short answer is ‘yes’, but the ‘how?’ will reveal itself as time goes on and doors open,” he said. “You can temporarily take the Marine out of the fight but you can never take the fight out of the Marine.”

Honeywell to Upgrade Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport Security System
 |
Honeywell announced that the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport will upgrade its security system with Honeywell’s Pro-Watch Security Management Software Platform. |
The new system will help address new and evolving federal security guidelines, streamline security and personnel management, and reduce ongoing maintenance costs of security.
The upgrade will capture biometric data and route identification information through new security management software, including, installation of new head-end, intelligent controllers and a DESFire contactless smart card identification badge system.
Honeywell Pro-Watch, a security management software platform, will route all of the airport’s security information through one system interface. Card readers, controllers, and circuit boards work with the DESFire open standard contactless card technology that will prepare the airport for biometric storage and transfer capabilities, and position the airport to better comply with anticipated federal guidelines.

Brivo Systems Announces Partnership with Dedicated Micros
 |
Brivo Systems announced that they have recently integrated digital video recording and CCTV with the Brivo ACS Online Application. This initial release integrates with two products from Dedicated Micros, the Digital Sprite 2 (DS2) and the DV-IP Server (DV-IP). |
A new section, titled “DVRs”, has been added to the ACS Online Application. By simply providing the IP information for the DVR and correlating camera locations with readers or other input devices, you will be able to play video clips for any event in the Activity Log. Live viewing is also possible via the integrated Camera Directory. Additional brands and models will be introduced throughout the remainder of 2006.
“CCTV Integration is another nice addition to the Brivo System feature list,” commented Bob Mosler, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Brivo. “The great thing about this feature, and all of the enhancements made to the online system, is that all of our customers have access to the feature the next time they log onto the system. No one has to worry about what revision of software they are on or what effort and costs are involved with getting upgraded to the latest version. This is an integral and extremely beneficial feature of Brivo’s Web Hosted system design.”
