NFPA 731 was approved last year, but is on a fast track for changes. Everyone – whether an NFPA member or not – has the opportunity to submit a proposed change including proposing entirely new words or an entirely new idea. (You only have to be an NFPA member to vote on changes.) The NFPA Standards Committee is obligated to look at each properly submitted proposal. A proposal is an entirely new idea, but may include the addition or deletion of text. The committee will accept proposals regarding NFPA 731 until May 26, 2006. Following the review of the submitted proposals, NFPA will then consider comments until March 2, 2007. A comment is where you can specifically object to language or requirements in particular sections of the standard. NBFAA President Scot Colby has submitted a proposal on behalf of the association, but it is important that each individual review the current language and make their opinions known. The key to successfully having an impact is following the NFPA guidelines and procedures; improperly submitted proposals will NOT be considered. (Note: If you don’t already have a copy of the NFPA 731 standard you will need to purchase one from the NFPA.) There are a couple of ways you can submit your proposals to NFPA.
If you have questions about NFPA 731, please submit them to NBFAA at Communications@alarm.org or contact NBFAA’s NFPA representative George Bish at George.Bish@mastec.com or call (980) 521-8051. We will continue to keep you informed of the progress on this important industry issue. Remember you only have until May 26 to submit your proposal to NFPA. Cecil Hogan Comments on Hanging Up His Leadership Hat “NBFAA went through some serious growing pains in the mid 90s, but we have come out strong,” he said. “As the only national association truly representing the electronic life safety and security industry dealers on a nationwide basis, we are challenged by other associations for our members and our leadership position, and we are going to have to continue to be strong. Our chartered state association structure sets us apart from the others, and gives us a grassroots presence that the others cannot match.” Hogan will hang up his leadership hat at the end of June after many years of service to the industry and association. He began his commitment with the association as an active member of the Legislative and False Alarm Committees, and then in 1994, was asked to chair a new committee called the State Legislative Committee. This committee put together the first State Licensing Guide and produced the first Model State Licensing law—one of many accomplishments he’s still very proud of today. As far as advice for members, he encourages them to get the most from their membership by remembering the more you put into it, the more you will get out. “People say ‘I’ve got a business to run, I don’t have time for that stuff’ or ‘It’s just a good ol’ boy network’, and they believe it because that’s what they’ve been told. If they read the information, they learn things that affect their business. If they come to a meeting, they find out about issues that affect their bottom line and meet a lot of ‘good ol’ boys’ who happen to be in the same business they’re in and have the same problems and concerns they’ve got. After a while they find out they can buy errors and omissions insurance from a company that they own part of, with better coverage than they had before, for less than they were paying. It doesn’t take long to figure out that you really can’t afford NOT to be a member and be involved!” Involvement is the key for Hogan’s success and said he doesn’t intend to go far from the association and the action. “I’ve still got things to learn and I’ll sit on a couple of committees and bug the staff a little; It’s time for fresh blood and new ideas in the leadership, but I’ll still be one of the ‘old guys’ hanging around in the back.” Need to Get Away?
