Industry NewsLouisiana Stronger, Safer with New Building CodesEditor’s Note: NBFAA Executive Director Merlin Guilbeau recently joined the International Code Council advisory board. While Hurricane Katrina devastated much of Louisiana, the state is ready to rebuild stronger and safer than ever before using the International Codes developed by the International Code Council. In a special session, the state legislature approved adoption of the 2003 International Building, Residential, Existing Building, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes for use in Louisiana. The bill applies to buildings rebuilt in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and it also will be required for all buildings built or rebuilt statewide starting in 2007. Under the legislation, the 11 parishes hit hardest by the hurricanes have up to 90 days to begin implementing and enforcing the wind and flood provisions of the International Building and Residential Codes. The code requires homes and businesses built along the Gulf Coast to withstand winds of 130 to 150 miles per hour. The bill also establishes a 19-member council to oversee enforcement of the codes by local governments. ISC Quickly Running Out of Space Plans for ISC West 2006 are off and running. To date, space floor sales are outpacing last year with over 800 companies expected to participate in the upcoming show April 5-7, 2006, and dealers, integrators and end-users are expected to attend the annual 2006 NBFAA Spring Conference and CSA Symposium April 2 – 6, 2006.
Among the highlights: the Industry Summit keynote featuring Tom Ridge, first and former Secretary of Homeland Security, a blockbuster conference featuring the security industry's most revered thought-leaders, the support and networking opportunities afforded by ISC West sponsor, SIA, and endorsing associations such as the NBFAA and CAA and the wealth of new products that will be launched at the SIA/ISC West New Product Showcase. By registering online through the NBFAA Web site at www.alarm.org, members can take advantage of the 20 percent discount for the ISC West Educational Conference package and free admission to the ISC West Expo. SIAC Receives $10,000 DonationThe Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC), a coalition of national professional trade associations in North America established to provide resources and information on alarm management issues, received a $10,000 donation from Tri-Ed Distribution, Inc. “SIAC supports a cooperative effort between law enforcement and the alarm industry and we are getting results, including a 64 percent reduction in the alarm dispatch rate,” said SIAC Executive Director Stan Martin. “It’s important for industry leaders like Tri-Ed Distribution to continue to support our programs.” In other SIAC news, SIAC recently retained The Margulies Communications Group (MCG) of Dallas as its agency of record for public relations and communications services. “We’re excited to have The Margulies Communications Group join our team and help us in our alarm reduction education efforts. Over the past year, we’ve worked closely with local elected officials and law enforcement in a number of jurisdictions to reduce false dispatches. We expect to increase those efforts in the coming year and MCG will help us get our messages across to key constituents both internally and externally,” said SIAC Executive Director Stan Martin.
