Beware of Security Scams!!!

Members and fellow security professionals beware— a widespread telephone and e-mail scam is circling the security industry.

In several cases, scam artists are trying to order large quantities of smoke detectors. In particular, some people are using “Sprint relay operators” to request a sale of goods from the business. Relay operators are individuals who act as a voice for hard of hearing or deaf people with the use of telecommunication devices.

Various versions of this scam have been going on for several years, with criminals ordering goods from a business with the use of a stolen credit card. Large shipments of everything from bulk candy to car stereos and even books have been scammed in the past.

At NBFAA, we want to inform our members and our fellow security professionals about this crime. By reporting the scams, you can help alert other businesses.

For more information about this issue or to make a complaint, contact the Federal Communication Commission at www.fcc.gov or (888) 225-5322 or your local Better Business Bureau.

You can also visit the following Web sites for tips on how to keep you and your business from being a victim of scams.

Bosch Helps Community Combat Crime

Bosch Security Systems has been working with the non-profit Lancaster Community Safety Coalition to help combat crime in the community by advancing crime prevention strategies and deploying Bosch video cameras in public spaces.

The Crime Prevention through Environmental Design project, which started with some dedicated members and some donated equipment from Bosch, is a new approach to crime prevention. By incorporating high tech security equipment and redesigning certain public areas to make them less susceptible to criminal activities, the project enables community members to take an active role in helping police monitor trouble areas, while keeping the members out of harm's way.

According to a recent Keystone Poll, over 70 percent of the residents surveyed strongly support or somewhat support the use of video cameras in public spaces to combat crime.

The coalition has been so successful in its "Crime Prevention by Environmental Design" program that other communities have expressed an interest in adopting similar crime prevention programs based on the interest received from the coalition's presentation at the 2004 Pennsylvania Downtown Center annual conference in Pittsburgh, Penn.

Brink’s Home Security Recognizes One-Millionth Customer

Edward and Laurie Stolarz, who reside in the Boston metro area, were recognized as Brink’s Home Security’s one-millionth customer with the delivery of a $10,000 check by Brink’s Armored Truck on Nov. 5.

The money was donated in their name to the American Cancer Society. Additionally, to welcome the Stolarz family as a special customer, Brink’s installed the security system and awarded over one million minutes of free system monitoring service (three years free monitoring).

“We have reached this important milestone through our employees’ commitment to providing customers with superior service, rapid response and peace of mind,” said Bob Allen, president of Brink’s Home Security.

"It Takes a Thief" to Feature NBFAA Member

The PROTECT Smoke Cannon™ will be featured in an upcoming episode of the Discovery Channel’s "It Takes a Thief" series.

Lion Television, an independent production company that creates the show from New York, sent a field producer to ISC West 2005 in Las Vegas to look for security products that could prove a worthy foil to the show’s co-hosts, highly-skilled ex-burglars. The Smoke Cannon caught the producer’s eye in the Sands Expo lobby, where the fog-based burglary deterrent was making its Western Hemisphere debut.

PROTECT, who is an NBFAA member company, was chosen to play a role in the security makeover of a high-end automobile repair shop. The canon eliminates burglary losses by filling protected areas with dense but harmless clouds of fog if break-ins occur. The show seeks real households and businesses to add to the educational value of watching ex-crooks do their magic.

The product has been featured on several television and news programs since its U.S. launch in April 2005, including NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and CBS and NBC affiliate newscasts.

Your Voice Counts: Members Encouraged to Provide Input to ASIS

The Commission on Guidelines of ASIS International has begun to reevaluate and revise their first guideline General Security Risk Assessment, which was published in 2002.

Once all the comments are received, the commission will form the guideline committee to evaluate comments, make recommendations, and draft a new guideline.
