The bill, which was signed into law by the President on Aug. 8, 2005, changes Daylight Savings Time (DST) by four weeks. Under the new law, DST would begin on the second Sunday of March and end the first Sunday of November, beginning March 1, 2007. Due to this change, equipment which is time and date sensitive – and has incorporated the current DST dates – would require reprogramming. As a member of NBFAA and the security industry, we encourage you to send your comments to the DOE, who will soon be issuing regulations to implement the provisions of the bill. AAA Hosts 2005 Annual Meeting and Trade ShowThe Alabama Alarm Association will hold their 2005 Annual Meeting and Trade Show in Birmingham, Ala., Oct. 26-27. Shotguns and Shootouts: NJBFAA Raising Money for Scholarship FundIf you had the chance to compete in one of the fastest growing sports in America and at the same time help raise money for a scholarship fund, would you? Well, here’s your chance! The New Jersey Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (NJBFAA) is sponsoring a Sporting Clay Shootout to benefit the association’s scholarship fund. The event will take place at the end of October. NJBFAA is also one of the fifteen NBFAA Chartered State Associations (CSAs) who participate in the NBFAA Youth Scholarship Program (YSP). The Youth Scholarship provides cash awards for college attendance to deserving sons or daughters of police and fire officials. The first place winner of each CSA scholarship program is entered into the national competition. The first place winner of last year’s national award was the first place scholarship winner from the NJBFAA. TBFAA Hosts Annual ConventionThe Tennessee Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, a Chartered State Association of NBFAA, will host their annual convention Oct. 10-12 at the Marriott Hotel in Franklin, Tenn. Synnex Appoints Two New Board MembersSYNNEX Corporation, a global information technology supply chain services company, announced the appointment of James Van Horne and Gregory Quesnel to the company’s Board of Directors. Van Horne, an A.P. Giannini Professor of Finance at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, has been appointed to the company’s Audit and Compensation Committees. SmokeCannon Featured on The Tonight ShowThe PROTECT SmokeCannon from PROTECT Security Systems of America, an associate member of NBFAA, was featured on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” Comedian Mitch Fatel and Mike Ash from Garden State Fire and Security discussed the benefits of the SmokeCannon as an anti-burglary system proven to stop burglars before they can steal. Fatel demonstrated the SmokeCannon on the show by entering an enclosed area that had been filled with dense but harmless smoke. After a few moments, Fatel emerged from the area and gave seven million United States viewers a visual punch line. Police Dispatch Quality Award Program Seeking Entries for 2006The Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC) and the False Alarm Reduction Association (FARA) are still seeking entries for the Police Dispatch Quality (PDQ) 2006 Award program. The award is designed to recognize alarm installing and monitoring companies following established industry practices in order to reduce the number of unnecessary police dispatch requests. Representatives of the winning security company team will also receive an all-expense paid trip to Las Vegas to attend International Security Conference (ISC) West in April 2006 and present their success story courtesy of Honeywell Security Group and Security Sales and Integration (SSI). Alarm and VoIP Interoperability TestedSOURCE: CSAA Signals, Oct. 3, 2005, www.csaaul.org Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. (CableLabs®) of Louisville, Colo., a nonprofit research and development consortium dedicated to helping its cable operator members integrate new cable telecommunications technologies into their business objectives, hosted a " Home Alarm and VoIP Interoperability Test" event the week of Sept. 19, 2005. The primary goal of this event was to verify that digital alarm communications formats and down loaders can be successfully passed through a PacketCable-based VoIP network. This event was the first of its kind, providing an open forum for both PacketCable vendors and Alarm System manufacturers to work together and to exchange technical information related to their respective technologies.
