New NBFAA Member Benefit Program Aids Debt Collection

For many alarm companies, debt recovery can be a long and involved process that costs valuable time and money – and there is no guarantee that those recovery efforts will be successful.

To help our members through this process, NBFAA has added the services of Associate Member Company Alarm Debt Liquidation Group (ADLG) as the latest Member Benefit Program. ADLG, a division of Anderson, Crenshaw & Associates, will manage and administer NBFAA member companies’ debt collection efforts. The company also offers special rates to NBFAA members, which include free online access, free account placement, no cost for non-collected items, free credit reporting and free asset & liability investigations.

Give ADLG a call today for help with your debt recovery issues at (866) 400-4550 or email the NBFAA staff at staff@alarm.org for more information. They will be happy to assist you.

Be sure to mention that you are an NBFAA member to take advantage of the NBFAA member rates.

Associations to Present Second Annual Tri-Association Award

For the second year, NBFAA members will join members and special guests of the Security Industry Association (SIA) and the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) in presenting the prestigious Triton Award to an individual who has selflessly worked to facilitate and strengthen the relationships between various security and alarm industry organizations, and has also been dedicated to the positive growth of the industry.

The identity of the 2005 Triton Award winner will be announced shortly.

On Wednesday, August 24, the 2005 Tri-Association Awards Dinner, The Thomas Crown Affair, will be held at the Three West Club in Manhattan from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in conjunction with the NBFAA Fall Conference and the ISC East Expo in New York .

Throughout the course of this extraordinary evening, attendees may network with their colleagues as they enjoy a cocktail hour, hors d’oeuvres, seated dinner and live entertainment. International travel safety and security expert Bob Arno will dazzle and delight the audience with his entertaining insight into the world of safety and security . . . and keep an eye on your pockets!

The Awards Dinner will also honor Cecil Hogan, winner of NBFAA’s Morris F. Weinstock Person of the Year Award, as well as the winners of SIA’s George R. Lippert Memorial Award and CSAA’s Stanley C. Lott Award.

Ralph Wayne Sevinor of Wayne Alarm in Lynn , Mass. , received the inaugural Triton Award at the 2004 Tri-Association Awards Dinner.

Each year, the Awards Dinner makes a donation from the event proceeds to a new charity. This year a portion of the ticket proceeds will be donated to the KlaasKids Foundation. Marc Klaas created the foundation in 1994 following the tragic abduction and murder of his twelve-year-old daughter, Polly Klaas. The KlaasKids Foundation is a non-profit organization that partners with concerned citizens, the private sector, law enforcement agencies and legislators to develop ways to safeguard children against violence.

Tickets to the 2005 Tri-Association Awards Dinner are on sale now at www.siaonline.org. Tickets cost $250 each. Don’t miss this entertaining evening and a chance to support your peers as they are honored for their hard work and dedication to the security industry. NFPA Approves Security Installation Standard

Last week, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) voted to adopt NFPA 731 – Standard for the Installation of Premise Security Systems during the technical committee report session at the NFPA World Safety Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas .

NBFAA opposed the adoption of a one-size-fits-all standard for security installation, mainly because the standard requires all installed equipment to perform operations that can only be achieved by few, if any, manufacturers without adding additional equipment to the systems. Additional equipment means additional cost – for both the installer and the customer. We were also concerned that the members of the committee that formulated NFPA 731 were not representative of the alarm industry as a whole.

During last week’s meeting, a group of four alarm industry representatives raised objections to the new standard during the meeting, but in the end, we were not able to get the proposal sent back to committee to address our concerns.

Thank you to those individuals who are members of both NBFAA and NFPA who took the time to attend the committee meetings and voice your opposition. We still believe that NFPA is a flawed standard, and we will continue to work on our members’ behalf to do whatever we can to protect your livelihood.

Amherst Alarm Acquires Adelphia Accounts

NBFAA member company Amherst Alarm has acquired the Buffalo-area accounts of Adelphia Security. The acquisition adds 2,500 new customers to its existing customer base of 12,000.

Amherst Alarm purchased Adelphia's accounts from Devcon, a Florida-based company that won them in a bankruptcy court bidding in March. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

We want to hear from you. If you have a story you'd like to share with other NBFAA members, contact us at 301-585-1855 or by email at communications@alarm.org.

Member Benefit Spotlight: Security America Risk Retention Group

Since its introduction in late 2003, Security America Risk Retention Group (SARRG) has helped NBFAA member companies save thousands of dollars on their general liability/errors and omissions (E&O) insurance policies. And recently, the program expanded its offerings to provide up to $5 million in coverage!

The SARRG Board of Directors recently accepted a proposal from Employers Reinsurance Corporation (ERC), an AM Best 'A' rated company to extend coverage availability to a maximum of $5 million per occurrence. This opens the door to many NBFAA members who previously couldn't take advantage of the insurance because they needed coverage in excess of $1 million.

And remember, SARRG is also working with local brokers, allowing members to maintain established relationships with their current brokers and take advantage of the savings that SARRG offers.

Security America Risk Retention Group is just one of the many benefits available to NBFAA members. For more information on the program, visit www.securityamericarrg.com or call 866-315-3838.

St. Louis Begins Enforcing Ordinance

A new city ordinance that will require alarm owners to pay fines for false alarms took effect in St. Louis on
June 1.

The new city ordinance is St. Louis ' latest attempt to curb the problem. The plan calls for an annual $25 registration fee for residents and $50 for businesses with security systems that include police notification.

It also calls for a system of fines for false alarms: $25 for a second offense, $50 for a third and for a fourth offense, a $50 fine plus a 30-day suspension of alarm services.

Collection of the fines is up to the alarm monitoring company.

Senate Committee OKs Nuclear Security Bill

The Senate committee that oversees the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved a nuclear security bill last week that could increase security requirements at more than 100 nuclear plants nationwide.

The Environment and Public Works Committee approved the Nuclear Security Infrastructure Act of 2005, which would require the NRC to conduct security evaluations at nuclear plants at least once every three years. It would also allow security guards to possess more powerful weapons and would require nuclear plants to conduct thorough criminal history checks for prospective employees.

The bill would also require the NRC to develop guidelines for implanting uniform materials control and accountability programs for spent fuel rods. The NRC has already begun developing these guidelines.

The New York Police Department, the nation’s largest police force, has requested funding for about 400 new surveillance cameras to install in busy commercial districts and other areas that have seen a rise in robberies and burglaries.

New York police already watch live feeds from hundreds of surveillance cameras in city housing projects throughout the city. The new cameras would not be monitored, but would record high-quality digital video that could help identify suspects if a crime takes place. The NYPD believes that the presence of cameras – when installed in the open and marked with “NYPD” – deters would-be thieves.

The NYPD is not saying where they plan to put the cameras, nor is there any indication of what the timeline and cost would be for the cameras.

DHS, Red Cross Plan National Preparedness Month for September

For the second year, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the American Red Cross will co-sponsor National Preparedness Month 2005 in September.

The goal of nationwide effort is to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies and to encourage people to take action.

Throughout September, DHS and the Red Cross will work with local, state and federal government organizations and the private sector to highlight the importance of public emergency preparedness. National Preparedness Month will provide Americans with a variety of opportunities to learn more about preparing for emergencies, including natural disasters and potential terrorist threats. Events, activities, and messages across the nation will encourage individuals to get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, be informed about different threats and get involved in preparing their communities.

The initiative will officially launch with a public emergency preparedness fair on September 1 at Union Station in Washington .
