NBFAA Position Paper on NFPA 731 Standard Available

The Technical Committee of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) will submit NFPA 71 - Standard for the Installation of Electronic Premises Security Systems at the NFPA World Safety Conference & Exposition in Las Vegas from June 6-10.

NBFAA is encouraging all members who are also NFPA members to attend the committee report sessions on June 8, 9 and 10 and vote against the standard.

The majority of equipment manufactured to meet current design specifications cannot mechanically meet the proposed requirements of NFPA 731. Any standard that is put into law without the technology being capable of complying with the law will be catastrophic to the industry.

NBFAA members could see a significant loss of business in elective system installations with the increased cost that would accompany system compliance. A complete position paper on the standard is available online.

The Technical Committee Report Sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, June 8, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday, June 9, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Friday, June 10, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Member Benefit Spotlight: Extended Warranty Insurance Program

To provide our members with an additional source of recurring revenue and to help cover the cost of alarm system maintenance, NBFAA is giving its members access to the first insured extended warranty program for commercial alarm systems.

Under the program, Security Finance Associates' Warranty Division, in conjunction with QOMLINQ LLC, Client Services Network, Inc. and Heritage Warranty, are offering alarm dealers the capability of offering five years of extended warranty (parts and labor coverage) on new and existing alarm systems.

Best of all, alarm dealers can offer this coverage without incurring any financial risk. The program is backed by insurance coverage, which customers pay for themselves. This can be collected each month with the monitoring service fee and can also be financed in most equipment leases.

NBFAA members receive the warranty coverage at guaranteed special low rates and can mark up the retail price to provide a new source of recurring monthly revenue in addition to the increased service profit.

Extended Warranty Insurance coverage is just one of the many benefits available to NBFAA members. For more information on the program or to enroll contact Tony Smith at tsmith@securityfinance.com or call 626-795-9199.

Beware of Online Ticket Scam

As you make your plans to travel for business or pleasure, beware of internet scams promising airline tickets at greatly reduced prices.

A recent e-mail from Warren Campbell, Deputy Director, Technical Services for the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), warned that there are a number of websites that have generated complaints that they failed to deliver on the promised tickets. Among them are busysky.net, cheapclouds.com, crazytickets.com, submitprice.com and happyticket.net.

Many users who have attempted to buy tickets through these sites have reported similar experiences. They attempted to purchase tickets using credit cards, only to receive error messages indicating that their card could not be processed because of technical problems. To rectify the situation, they were told to submit their payment via Western Union. In most cases, not only were users out the money they sent via Western Union, but their credit cards were also charged.

While many of the sites mentioned here have been disabled by authorities, others will undoubtedly pop up to take their place. So keep this in mind: Whenever you are making a purchase online (whether it's airline tickets or something else), if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always do some research to avoid getting scammed.
