Government Relations Update

Recently, Rep. George Miller (D-CA), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, and Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX) introduced the College Opportunity and Affordability Act of 2007 (H.R. 4137). The bill would reform the nation’s higher education programs. Included in the draft bill was a scaled down version of the legislation introduced by Rep. Vito Fossella (R-NY) with language concerning fire/life safety in dorm rooms. The House Education and Labor Committee voted unanimously to approve H.R. 4137 with the fire safety language included.

This is the same language that was passed last year on the house floor as an amendment to Congress’ first try at a higher education reauthorization measure but no action was taken in the Senate. We are working together with Rep. Fossella’s office and the committee to protect this language through the process of passage on the House floor. We will also be working hard with the Conference Committee to resolve the difference with the Senate bill and the White House in signing it into law. Finally our government relations team will meet with Department of Education officials to influence the regulation and grant criteria and funding allocations.
