George P. Gunning, President

George P. Gunning, CEO of USA Alarm Systems in Monrovia, Calif., took the helm as president of the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) on July 1, 2006 along with a new executive committee representing the national scope of the electronic security industry’s largest trade association. Gunning becomes the first NBFAA president from the western United States in more than 30 years.

Gunning began serving as president-elect in July 2005 following the NBFAA’s annual elections. He will serve a two-year term as president.

An active member of the security industry for more than 20 years, Gunning has held leadership positions in local, state and national trade associations.

He served for five years as a director on the board of the Los Angeles Burglar & Fire Alarm Association, and was involved in the unification of 10 local security and fire alarm associations, helping to bring them under the banner of the California Alarm Association (CAA), an NBFAA Chartered State Association.

He served as president of CAA and sat on the Board of Directors in various positions and chaired the fire committees for many years. He is one of the founders of the Greater Los Angeles Security Alarm Association, as well as a member of the California Automatic Fire Alarm Association (CAFAA). He also served as the sole industry representative on the Los Angeles Burglar Alarm Task Force which rejected verified response and adopted an alarm policy in line with the Model Ordinance.

Gunning has spent many years helping to bring professional status to the security and fire industry through state licensing and supporting the development of ongoing training for the security and fire alarm industry.

In January, 2001 the CAA and CAFAA formed a joint effort under the Western Burglar & Fire alarm Association (WBFAA) to jointly sponsor a Fire/Life Safety Technician Apprenticeship Program to satisfy the mandate of California state law. Gunning was the founding chairman of the WBFAA Unilateral Apprenticeship and Training Committee which launched the apprenticeship program. Today, more than 1,000 technicians are currently enrolled in the statewide program, and NBFAA is on a path to launch a national apprentice program modeled on the WBFAA curriculum.

Gunning received the CAA George A. Weinstock Award for Lifetime Achievement and Service to the industry and the 2003 NBFAA Morris F. Weinstock Award, the organization’s highest honor for service to the industry and association.

In addition to his service at the local and state levels, Gunning has chaired and served on numerous committees for NBFAA. He has also served as the NBFAA representative to the Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC) which promotes sound public safety policy related to alarm systems.

Upon taking the helm, Gunning reminded members of the importance of their mission. “I believe that the work we do every day in our businesses makes a positive contribution to the quality of life for our customers and the communities we serve.

“Our agenda as an association should come from the shared goals and objectives of our member companies. NBFAA will grow and prosper as an organization as long as we are serving their business needs. I believe that focusing our energy and resources on the individual member company will serve as the foundation for the next stage of growth and expansion of NBFAA,” Gunning explained.
